Dylan Hernandez just tweeted that Darvish is getting posted tomorrow. Things are definitely going to get interesting for us now.

I just saw that last year he actually lost 7 games with a 1.44 ERA. The Ham Fighters must have had a horrible offense.

so he doesn't do enough to help his team win

Yeah, Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver think he sucks AND THEY'RE IN THE HALL OF FAME!

Darvish really is the biggest deal for me for the rest of the offseason. I'm thinking that we might be better served not being the winner for Fielder, and Darvish offers star upside at a very young age.

i think i agree on both fielder and darvish. how wild would you go for yu? is the 50 and 50 thing the ceiling?

That's so hard to tell from my standpoint, but I trust that the FO has done their due dilligence on scouting Darvish and how he'll transition. I would be understanding, but really leery of anything at or above Dice-K's total value. I'd think a happy medium would be posting+contract being similar to what Wilson just got, something approaching 5 years, 80 million. I could be hopelessly naive about that.

This might have more tie-in with Fielder than anything though, because so much of Darvish's compensation will be immediate. If losing Fielder to Seattle means Smoak is available, or Miami means Zambrano and/or Morrison is a possibility, then getting in on the contingencies might be the better play. Even more so if LA decides to just cut bait with Morales. I'd be willing to take that gamble at 1B, but we'd need Darvish, and I'd want to pursue probably more than one Upton, Headley, Morrison, etc. to hedge against that risk so that next year isn't a complete throw away.

Jon_Heyman: Al exec predicts darvish will be "100 million dollar man" counting posting fee and contract

Is this a risk we're willing to take? I remember Matsuzaka being considered a "can't miss," and well.. he missed.

Darvish is quite a bit better than Daisuke was.

$100M incl posting fee is not a shocking number

And yea, Darvish is much more talented than Matsuzaka. Not that Dice-K was some colossal bust.

Not wanting to pour over every page here, but wasn't the "expected" contract to be something like 8/$50 with a $40-50 mil posting fee?

I'd be totally on board with a $50MM posting + 5/50 type deal.

8/50? I could be wrong but 8 years seems much longer than reality.

Yea, I'd do that.

And that's kind of why I was asking, I thought someone had linked something that gave an exmple of what was expected. I know it was $10 AAV or lower, but couldn't remember the length.

Anyone have a clue how a posting fee that size would affect payroll this season? I'm assuming being a one time thing, it wouldn't affect it much, but maybe a slightly lower, or no raise, this year? Just wondering as there's people here that follow this more than I.

How long does the posting process take again?

Four days after officially posted, bidding is closed. Three days after that, Japanese team must decide whether to accept the bid. At that point, the winning team becomes public knowledge and has 30 days to negotiate a contract.

He's better than Matsuzaka, didn't throw 200 innings at 18 like Matsuzaka, and he's bigger than Matsuzaka with a traditional pitcher's build.

$100 million wouldn't make me flinch at all. $125 million and I start to get iffy.

But can Darvish throw a GYROBALL!?!?!?!?!

I didn't think so.

Pass.

He actually can.

The righthander works with a deep array of pitches, common for top Japanese hurlers. He throws four-seam, two-seam and cut fastballs and compliments them with at least three different breaking balls. I've also seen reports of Darvish mixing in a change-up and the ever elusive shuuto, often referred to as a 'gyroball' in the US, where the batter sees a dot and thus reads breaking ball but the pitch actually stays straight -- think of it like a backup slider.
