I can't believe "Castro and/or Garza for Theo" is even being discussed semi-seriously here

Believe it.

The Devil Rays traded their best player at the time, (Randy Winn) for Lou. Manny Sanguillen who was a very good catcher was traded to the A's for Chuck Tanner.

I don't know that the Red Sox would ask for Castro or Garza, but I think it's worthy of being discussed. It sounds to me like most people would dislike it, that's fair enough. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Who would be a good player(s) to trade for Theo?

There's nobody that's quite like Winn on the Cubs roster, but the closest comparison would be much closer to Sean Marshall than Castro or Garza. Winn was a guy who struggled on the minor and major league level until he had a big year the year before he was traded at age 28. He also was about to start getting more expensive. There was no expectation that he was any kind of great player.

Agreed and why in the world would Epstein even want that. If he wants to go he can bitch and moan till the Red Sox let him walk. Boston should be grateful for everything he has done for them. If they really want something they can have Byrd.

Kinda surprised nobody has linked to this article on fangraphs.

The article seems to suggest that we might be best served to take the money that would otherwise be spent on Theo and instead spread it around to the top GM candidates and assistants in the game. What the article fails to account for though is how many of those top guys came from the Red Sox system. So I'm inclined to believe that Epstein has an eye for talent even in his front office.

Friedman is still my top guy... but Epstein has a proven track record of success, has dealt with a large budget in a large market before, and has a good relationship with the best manager on the job market right now (assuming Earl Weaver doesn't decide to stop fishing). I'd be extremely happy to see him come in provided we aren't giving up irreplaceable pieces like Castro and Garza. If it takes a Marlon Byrd or a Darwin Barney, so be it.

No doubt the Sox owe Theo a lot but at the same time Theo signed a couple of questionable long term contracts (Lackey and Crawford) over the last 2 years and failed to make the playoffs both years. I don't think the Red Sox would be readily open to bailing Theo out of the "mess" he created. It would be like if Hendry bailed to another team in 2007 after signing Soriano, Lilly, Ramirez, Lee and Zambrano to long term deals, if only Hendry was desirable.

What I'm saying is, while I think its crazy that people would expect compensation for Theo (players getting traded for managers/gms has happened 3 times ever that I can remember and GMs do leave occasionally with years left on contracts for no compensation), I wouldn't be shocked if they either forced Theo to stay in Boston to preside over the team he spent so much money building, or would demand something of value from the Cubs, which would likely be a middle of the road prospect or prospects at best. There is no way the Cubs are going to trade a 21 year old all star SS for a GM, no matter how highly regarded Theo is. If it came to that the Cubs would almost certainly say, ok on to plan B.

You know, just because some crazy person raises the idea as [expletive] stupid/bizarre as trading Castro/Garza for Theo doesn't mean you have to acknowledge it.

Pouncing on stupid ideas like that is sort of the lifeblood of this place

I'm not sure I'm buying what that guy wrote. Baseball management is still filled mostly by scout types and failed/retired ballplayers. I think finding the right guy to be the GM is essential. I guess the question is if the Red Sox ask for significant compensation as has been reported, how much is too much? They don't need Byrd or Barney (unless they want to use him as a SS). One of the Cubs biggest problems has been and continues to be a lack of talent.

The other big question would be, how much unhappiness are the Red Sox willing to tolerate. If they ask for Castro and Garza and the Cubs say no, how unhappy would Theo be? Would they want a guy who wants to be somewhere else? I'm so excited about this and as Tree noted, setting myself up for disappointment.

The funny thing is, the "crazy person" was UK, and he was simply using hyperbole (I think) to make the point that hiring a top notch GM would be worth spending significant resources to acquire.

Ah. I couldn't really be bothered to wade through the rest of that discussion.

Commenting on things that you didn't fully read is another NSBB tradition.

I guess the question is if the Red Sox ask for significant compensation as has been reported,

CubinNY reporting live.

"Bob Nightengale chipped in with a note that, if John Henry were to allow Epstein to head to Chicago, they would ask for significant compensation in return."

That's from the fangraphs article and also reported about 5 pages back.

Bandon's point proven, again.

Also reported that there is respect between the 2 and he wouldn't hold him back from going elsewhere.

I feel like the Cubs might simply say to the Red Sox, "We're either making Theo our President or Cherington our GM. Which one do you want to keep?"

Sources: Red Sox hierarchy has had informal conversations about what to do if Theo Epstein is no longer the GM.

Seems like Boston's sending out a trial balloon through Olney to see if ditching Epstein will be palatable to the fanbase.

My limited sample indicates they are fine with it. They believe "it's time" and that the team has been going downhill for far too long.
