As a total side note, I'm not sure I have a first choice. Maybe Friedman, but I doubt he leaves, and if he does, there's the hometown lure for him. I like the structured way they run their system, demanding accountability and performance from their talent. Part of it is out of necessity, due to their market limitations.

I really don't know who would be 2nd for me after Friedman, assuming an "everyone is available theory" which obviously isn't happening. Cashman would be up there, I think people underestimate how hard he's worked to bring their system back up to snuff. Granted, money makes a huge difference there (with their international signings, but Ricketts is opening up the checkbook in amateur signings).

I know about Bonderman, but the rumor was that he was active in the draft room, moreso than other GM's, even up until the last few years.

Yes, and yet he didn't shut down a pick we know he absolutely hated. So, maybe by the word active the rumor meant possibly present and moving, but not in the mood to say no to what his scouts were saying about him.

I've done the same with the A's system. I remember the Richie Robnetts, Danny Putnams, and Javier Herraras of the world too. Michael Choice...Ryan Flaherty? Michael Choice is a CF possibly RF who projects to hit in the .240-.260 range, walk, and hit with power. Ryan Flaherty? He's also 4 years younger than Flaherty...Grant Green just won the MVP of the Futures Game this year...a lame award I know, but check out the alumni...guys like David Wright and Alfonso Soriano....Tyson Ross has been pretty good and might have good upside as a reliever...we're not talking a dead system here. We're talking about a system that just 10, 12 years ago was one of the most productive in the game, under the very same GM who was and is considered amongst the game's elite GMs. I have alot of trouble believing that this is anything more than a phase for their farm.

They have the pitching, it's the bats that need to come around. Personally, I like Brandon Allen and I've always been a Chris Carter fan, so there's a chance bat talent will be coming through soon to go with Weeks.

a couple of weeks agao you were asking what prospects beane's system had produced in the last 10 years. make up your mind.

I was really hoping things would have heated up today for Cubs news, but I don't see anything out there. Some rumors of Bobby V to Boston and Tito to the south side, but nothing Cubs related.

Should I root for a Francona/Epstein package? I really dont want to even get my hopes up

Hey, as long as you're able to put up with a team that considers 90 wins a disappointing season and can only manage to win 2 World Series in 10 years with a top 5 payroll.

Why do we want Francona again? He doesn't seem like anything special to me. I know he led the Sox to 2 titles but...I don't know he just doesn't seem like a premier manager to me.

There is no such thing as a premier manager. I like that his teams are incredibly patient and regularly lead or among the leaders in walks taken. Granted, that is a Boston philosophy, but he's been a part of it. He's managed 10 playoff series and won 7 of them. I think he will be a calm and rational voice in the clubhouse and not the net negative that Quade and Baker were, or an indifferent goof like Piniella became.

Who do you consider to be a "premier manager?"

Jeez I dunno. Not him though.

I guess Girardi, Bochy, LaRussa, Scioscia, Maddon

He just doesn't seem like one of those guys that you have to go after if he's available, so if I see that Tito and Theo are having a disconnect, I don't eliminate Theo from who to go after, I eliminate Francona.

I vote for Epstein/Martinez

Raffy for 1B coach.

Let's alienate the hell out of Ryno.

How the hell is Girardi premier but not Francona?

Yeah I have no problem with what he's done in Boston and I wouldnt be upset if he was our manager. The reason for my original message was responding to whoever implied that if Francona and Epstein couldnt work together they'd hire Tito and Friedman instead. I'd rather hire Theo and another manager instead.

It's not like Friedman is a step down.

TLR is bad, Bochy is very old school and Scioscia is a small ball lover (in the AL!) with impatient hitters.

Why are we arguing over 100% subjective meaningless labels anyway?

Dunno, never had a losing season as manager?

BTW, his Phillies teams ranked 11th, 11th, 5th, 14th in the NL in OBP when he was the manager. I remember reading when he took over as Boston manager that in Philly he didn't put much emphasis on patience and walking, so that's been in my head for the last 8 years. Obviously he adapted quite well due to the organizational philosophy and the players given to him though. I guess I just kind have saw him as Theo's Art Howe and its skewed my impression of him since then. Admittedly he did a very good job in Boston and I wouldn't have a problem being our manager. But if we had to choose between Theo as GM and Tito as manager, I'd choose Theo, and that's what prompted my original comment.

He's been a manager for 5 seasons, 4 of them with the New York [expletive] Yankees. His 1 seasons with Florida was below .500 and his 1st season with the Yankees was the only time in 15 freaking years that the Yankees didn't make the playoffs.
