I have but one question for Brian Kelly:

How in God's name could you possibly see anything in practice from Dayne Crist to make you think he was the starter over Rees based on what we saw on the field today?

That being said, if USF had turned it over even once, they probably lose. They didn't, so kudos to them for that. ND outgained the Bulls 2 to 1, but -5 in turnovers will kill you every time.

Boise State beating up Georgia. Now just as long as Georgia doesn't go out and lose to some scrub team like Va Tech did last year....

Assuming Boise makes it past Air Force, San Diego State, and TCU

Of course, but Boise State can't do it on their own. They have to have help.

Wow, these Georgia uniforms are a travesty.

Those uniforms are terrible and SWAC-tacular all at the same time.

Am I wrong for hating that all the names said Georgia? I REALLY hope that doesn't start a trend.

Man, reading that makes me so sad. That conference could have been amazing, with TCU, Utah, and BYU still in it and Nevada and Hawaii possibly joining.

I was too busy watching LSU to really even take note of that, but no you're not and I don't think that will catch on as a trend.

So yeah, the Mormons took out our top 3 RB's in a single half of football. Our #1 (one of the top RB's in the SEC, Brandon Bolden) and #2 are out for the season.

Stupid Rebels.

Hawaii, Nevada and Fresno are joining the conference next year, but yeah. It could've been a great mid-major conference if Utah and TCU stayed.

Hahah, UCLA lost to a Conference USA team that they were clearly bigger and faster than. Neuheisel is toast.

don't worry guys. Auburn is going to lose plenty of games this year. The run d was sickening but maybe that should be expected with four sophomores starting on the dline. I was impressed with the utah st. freshman qb.....very mobile and threw accurately. They ran a lot of misdirection and au was very conservative with blitzing for most of the game. im not expecting a lot from a team this young other than to get better every week.

And yeah...those georgia uniforms are ugly. this could be richt's last season

Glad to see that PSU gave Rob Boldin all of 3 series before pulling him for Scrappy McGritmeister

i swear i thought rob boldin left school.

He requested a transfer but Paterno denied it

nice guy, that one

Getting in on this late, but Rob Bolden and his father requested a transfer after the bowl game and before the Spring semester started. Since scholarships are binding for 1 full year and he was only in school for 1 semester, a transfer request because of playing time is absurd. Why would Joe be a "nice guy" and allow it, giving him 1 usable QB for all of Spring, Summer, and into the 2011 season? The Bolden's were trying to transfer based on emotion, Joe knew that, and everything worked out. For now.

Both QB's looked like poop yesterday. It's gonna be a tough year if they can't run the ball against the better teams

McNeese St. did it too. It's dumb.

What is going on with Iowa running backs?!?! Iowa loses another RB for the season after freshman Mika'il McCall goes down with a broken ankle. Iowa is going to have to have public tryouts pretty soon. Really strange and unfortunate to see so many issues with RB's on one team.

joe paterno is an incontinent old man, but i'm super-glad he knew what a young black man really wanted, even if the kid was saying the exact opposite. he's really in touch.

That being said, if USF had turned it over even once, they probably lose. They didn't, so kudos to them for that. ND outgained the Bulls 2 to 1, but -5 in turnovers will kill you every time.

All reports from camp were that Crist looked really, really sharp in practice. But the guy absolutely refuses to get the ball to Floyd. It's like he intentionally doesn't look to him on most of his throws. By contrast, Rees' first 3 reads are Floyd, Floyd, Floyd. He throws it to Floyd when he's not open (and Floyd catches it - imagine that). I don't know if it's lack of confidence that Floyd can make the play or if Crist is trying to prove he can spread it around to whomever, but it's killing him (of course, one of his few throws to Floyd was about 10 yards off the mark).

My only complaint with Kelly is Riddick returning punts. I get wanting a playmaker back there, but the guy never did it in HS or college and he looks totally uncomfortable. Besides, in 14 games, I think Kelly's team has only had 1-2 returnable punts. If we're going to fair catch every punt, why do you need a playmaker? But Kelly made clear in his presser that Riddick will be back there. So look for UM to get at least 1-2 free possessions on muffed punts.

I have to think we're going to see Rees starting and a few Hendrix/Golson series or packages next week. Barring injury, I think Crist has played his last snap of ND football. Disappointing finish for a really nice guy that came to ND as a 5-star, knowing he'd have to sit behind Clausen 2-3 years.

I have a bad feeling we're going to get smashed by Northern Illinois next week. They were pretty good last year and return a lot of their starters.

Everyone will need to be sharp. And if there's any chance of being bowl-eligible, they need this one.

I was at the IU-BSU game last night. By the 3rd quarter I found myself wishing I was somewhere else, like a bar. #-o

The offense started fast but disappeared in the 2nd half. I did like how Perez and Houston ran the ball. EWB had a decent stat line considering that he was under pressure about every time he dropped back to pass. But man oh man our defense is AWFUL. Again. :?

When it rains, it pours, I guess. Ole Miss lost its top two backs in the opening game. Arkansas lost its #1 and #2 rushers from a year ago before the season started. Dennis Johnson, who missed almost all of last year, missed game 1 with a hamstring injury.

All my mom and I were talking about at the stadium once we found out Rees was coming in was how awful we felt for Crist. I have no personal complaint with the guy and the situation sucks. But Rees is just the better QB.

And I also agree about the punt return game. If Kelly wants to create returns, he ought to teach his return team how to set one up.

Yep, he played well yesterday too for the small amount he played against a bad team. On the flip side, it does seem like they find a way to plug in another guy who then becomes pretty productive. I hope Vandenberg is ready though because with so many young running backs who will now have to play he will have to have a good year.

I never said Joe knew what Bolden wanted, just that his dad wanted a transfer 24 hours after his son didn't play in a bowl loss. A scholarship is binding for 1 year, Rob fulfilled half of that. Joe believes in contracts. I'm willing to bet Joe has never let a kid out of a scholarship halfway through year 1, unless there were extenuating circumstances. Nor should he.

If Rob and his dad wanted to transfer after the Spring semester, they were free to. They didn't, so I think it's safe to say the first request had some emotion involved with it. Also, "even if the kid was saying the exact opposite" is such B.S., considering he never said a word publicly. This was a prime case of Little League Dad being too involved.
