Peoria Journal-Star[/url]"]“We want our minor leagues to be as productive as possible. We do want to separate ourselves in that we want to be better,” Ricketts said in a news conference Wednesday at O’Brien Field. “We want to be known as a team that drafts and develops players better than the other teams.”

“I think the Chiefs have a good relationship with the Cubs,” Ricketts said. “I don’t know the terms of the deal, but I consider them a great partner.”

Ricketts attended a luncheon at O’Brien Field and then made an appearance before Wednesday’s game with Burlington, all part of the Chiefs’ effort to roll out the red carpet.

Chiefs manager Casey Kopitzke played in the Cubs system when the Tribune Co. owned the team. The night-and-day difference is apparent because of Ricketts’ interest in learning the about how the organization works.

“Without a doubt,” Kopitzke said. “One of the feelings you get is that there is somebody that has a plan and a message. It’s really neat to have him here with us.”

While Ricketts was fairly expansive in talking about the farm system, questions expressly about the status of general manager Jim Hendry and the recently passed trade deadline were deemed off limits. He turned guarded when asked about any possible changes for next season

“I don’t know just yet,” Ricketts said. “It’s something we’ll decide at the right time.”

hmmm....interesting

I was a vocal critic of Ricketts earlier in the season on this site. With what looks like a more dedicated approach to player development I'm beginning to change my opinion. We'll see if/when the 2011 draftees sign to know for certain but all indications are that the Cubs are spending a lot this year.

He was dealt a crap hand, I just hope he hasn't let Hendry convince him it was all the Tribune's fault.

hr and single for brett jackson.

vitters is 2-3 (both singles) while ha is 2-4 (also both singles). lake is 2-3 with a double.

angel guzman pitched well in his 90th 2-inning performance for daytona. lorick was terrible. brooks raley was lousy but managed to give up only 3 earned runs, in large part thanks to rhoderick getting out of a bases loaded, no out jam.

jackson's up to a .973 ops in iowa. when he slumps he'll probably be striking out with alarming frequency, but i'm still pretty happy to have a guy who's a good bet to be an average to above-average CF at a low price for several years.

Strikeouts are just an out. If he's OPSing in the .900s he'll be an all-star.

yes, but if he keeps striking out at least once a game (as he's done in his minor league career) it's really unlikely that he'll OPS .900, because he doesn't have great power.

nice game for struck so far - 6 ip, 5 h, 1 er, 0 bb, 7 k. his HR rate this year is unsustainable, but he's been reasonably good for a 21 year old at upper levels. wonder if he gets a look for the rotation next year.

It's quite exciting that Struck is more than holding his own in AAA. The promotions this year have seemed borderline reckless, but the kid is showing well. Here's hoping his secondary pitches develop.

Marwin Gonzalez looks better defensively than I thought.

Jae-Hoon Ha's making contact. I'm still not sold that his approach is good enough, but he's improving.

Ryan Flaherty looks ... frustrated? That was an awful strikeout, with a pitch that looked to be at least a good foot outside of the strike zone.

Any info on Roderik Pichardo? His numbers at DSL the previous 3 years have been impressive and he was brought stateside this year and has been pitching great so far (although he gave up a run tonight).

golden is 3-3 with a triple... would be nice to see him heat up again; seems like he hasn't done much since getting hurt.

He hasn't hit well lately but this is his 3rd straight game with an XBH and 4th in 5 games.

Yahoo Fantasy compares him to Drew Stubbs (fantasy production wise)....is that at all accurate in real life baseball world? I'm assuming he at least is not gonna steal as many bases.

I think there's some merit to it from a fantasy perspective. Assuming Jackson develops as people expect, he should hit for better average and strike out less than Stubbs, but he won't steal as many bases. Power is a bit tricky to predict since Stubbs was a late bloomer and never hit more than 12 HRs in a season in the minors, yet hit 22 last season and currently has 13. I think they'll end up about equal in that department when all is said and done, but Jackson might have it in him to hit 25-30 HRs a season during his peak.

Did he ever get into better shape since showing up in the spring so overweight?

Yes.

The ball would've had to knock the LF unconscious in order for ST Reggie to get a triple.
