Why couldnt the 3B just try the 3rd to 1st double play on that Soriano grounder like most other players would have done?

I didnt see the play, but Pat Hughes thought he tried to step on 3rd and throw home. Because he [expletive] up and didn't touch the bag, we're going to lose because no way he gets the tag out at home I'm guessing.

It doesn't look like he tried to. It looks like he dodged it.

Agreed. Also, Soto would've been tagged out easily if he had touched the base.

What an absolute joke of a team. The failure to retire a .225 hitter in the first inning and failure to produce a couple of runs after the bases were loaded and no outs is criminal. They get what they deserve.

Looks like Pitchf/x has 11 clear balls by Brewers pitches called strikes while the Cubs had maybe 2.

IOW, over 20% of their balls shown there were called strikes.

If nothing else, he showed us 1st hand why Blake DeWitts OBP is barely above his AVG.

If not for the error in the 9th inning, the Brewers bullpen would have recorded 12 outs while facing 11 batters to end the game. Another fine outing by Rudy Jaramillo's hitters.

K-Rod was getting some very generous strike calls in the 8th inning. He has to be responsible for 5 or so of those 11 clear balls.

HE SHOULD BE IN BASEBALL JAIL, EH, BALLGAME64?!??

Yes, Rudy deserves the Cubs.

Seriously though, don't you wonder what is said, if anything, when they bring in a reliever who has to pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out? Again, I don't expect Soriano to be anything other than what he is, but the writers and Cubs brass claim Barney has a high baseball IQ yet he swings at a terrible pitch. Like Gerald Perry used to say, you don't necessarily go to the plate looking for a walk, but you look for a pitch to drive, not just a pitch you can hit. It is funny that he became a scapegoat, but Hendry isn't questioning Rudy's ability when his teams have been at the bottom of the league in offense.

Posted

Perry and Jaramillo ultimately had or have little impact on the performance of the lineup on a game to game basis.

And if you bought the "smart player" garbage AT ALL you're a chump. Barney always has been a tremendously impatient hitter.

The thing about hitting coaches is that I can understand them helping the younger players, but when it comes to the veterans who have sone things one way for their entire careers, more often than not, they're not going to change their approach.

Are smart players the new gritty players? They need to do something to offset the fact that they aren't as talented as the stars.

No hitting coaches arent going to completely change a veteran's approach to hitting or swinging. Where their value comes in is identifying when a hitter has something off with his swing. They'll also introduce subtle changes when a vet is struggling. Bob picked up on one with Aramis Ramirez between April and July.

But yeah, blaming the hitting coach for an team like this is just a waste of energy. That said, when the hitting sucks and you cant fire the manager because its his first year, the hitting coach quickly becomes a scapegoat. Then again, Hendry gave Rudy a lot of money to come here, so with his job on the line it probably isn't in his best interest to admit failure there.

And for how late and how hard his pitches break directly downward, it doesn't surprise me that they fooled the umpire, the same way umps sometimes give up on big breaking balls that are able to come back to the strike zone.
