From MLBTR:

Cardinals, White Sox Talking Colby Rasmus

By Luke Adams [July 24 at 10:56am CST]

Despite publicly insisting they don't intend to trade Colby Rasmus, the Cardinals have engaged in discussions with the White Sox about the outfielder, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Strauss says talks between the two teams have "accelerated" within the last few days.

According to Strauss, Edwin Jackson and Matt Thornton are among the players who could interest the Cardinals. The Cards would also be looking for minor league talent from the White Sox, and a third team "may be sought to facilitate a deal."

The Nationals and Rays also remain interested in Rasmus, who has seen a recent decline in his playing time as Jon Jay has taken over as St. Louis's primary center fielder.

If Edwin Jackson and Thornton is enough to land Rasmus then Hendry needs to get his ass on the phone.

my guess is for the Cards to trade Rasmus in the division it would have to be a great deal for them. Would you be willing to go Dempster/Marshall? I would like to get Rasmus , but realistically think the price would be too high for the Cubs. I still wish we were interested enough to inquire.

Yes. Definitely. Even if we had to eat a big chunk of Dempster's 2012 deal.

I could see the Cards/Rays working out a deal. Maybe Rasmus and a mid level prospect or two for Upton, 1 of Davis, Niemann, Sonnanstine, and one of the Rays bullpen arms.

I can't imagine that the Cards would send him to us anyway, but if they are serious about moving him, I can guarantee that theyll get better offers than a rent a pitcher, a decent left handed reliever whose not as good as ours, and a few pieces from one of the worst farm systems in baseball. I suspect if the Sox want Rasmus they'll need to start with Gordon Beckham and/or Chris Sale.

Don't we think Rasmus may cost us just a teeny, tiny bit more than it would anyone else? I'll guarantee he's not worth what it'd take to get the Cards to trade him to us.

The problem is the Cards need a starter and I'm sure they wouldn't be willing to eat a lot of salary so they're just not a great fit for the Cubs. If not for that I'd happily part with B.Jackson, Marshall and another minor piece.

Does the Chicago media put a laser-like focus on one player and report relentlessly on non-dramatic stuff, like that player having his father throw BP to him? If so, you all don't want Rasmus.

The whole thing is quite ludicrous, built up by a [expletive]-disturber (Joe Strauss), fueled by a senile manager (La Russa) and amplified by a very stupid fan base that likes Jon Jay because of his facial expressions in the dugout. I'm not even kidding. They say things like "I'm not in the clubhouse. I don't know Colby Rasmus. But he he doesn't care and doesn't have the drive."

They definitely did that with Bradley.

Heck, you can find a ton of posts even on this site about, "Korey doesn't even care that he struck out. Look at his face when he goes back to the dugout."

Good point on CPatt.

Why even go as far back as Bradley and Patterson? You've got tons of complaints from last year and this year about how "it looks like they don't care." Meatballs gonna meatball.

objectively, might Jay actually be the better player of the two?

for the past two seasons, they've been virtually the same offensively (120 vs. 118 wRC+) and Jay grades out as the superior fielder in CF (8.7 vs. -2.2 career UZR/150 [in an admittedly small sample for Jay]), and there's only a year of difference in their ages

Id trade anyone not named Castro or Garza for Rasmus. He's got the potential to do what Matt Kemp is doing, and he's cheaper.

The idea that he's actually available is pretty crazy...they must really be pissed at him over there in St. Louis.

Still wouldnt be smart to trade him unless they get top value. yeah Holliday will have LF for the next 5 years or whatever, and even if they are set on Jay in CF, what happens with RF? I cant imagine Berkman signing another 1 year deal, and if the do find a way to resign Pujols and Wainwright, they certainly wont be able to sign him.

I think he's at the peak of what he can do right now. Twenty-three percent of his balls in play are flyballs, yet 14 percent are clearing the fence. There's nothing in his swing that says he will consistently hit over half of his flyballs for home runs*, so I think his slugging is inflated.

I also question if he's really a .300 hitter. Maybe I'm wrong, but .300 hitters who hit 54 percent of their balls on the ground and strike out 16 percent of the time seems out of line. So over a full season, I estimate that he's a .280/.330/.390 hitter.

*ETA: Sixty percent of his flyballs are going for homers. Not even Adam Dunn has done that.

i have no clue where you're seeing the 60% figure, it's 9.1% for his career and 14.6% for this year

he's as good a bet as anybody to hit .300 - he hits a ton of LD, GB and flashes moderate XBH ability - basically he's Howie Kendrick with better plate discipline

On the Rasmus rumors..the Cardinals need SP and I don't know if they can take on a big salary like Jackson and Thorton's. Plus, they are not letting Rasmus go for a rental. I'm surprised they wouldn't be interested in getting a dependable SS.

Perception becomes reality. CPatt, Jacque Jones, Bradley, etc.. didn't learn that having a smile on your face as you walk back to the dugout after striking out for the 100th time with men on base, the fans are not going to like it. It does look like it didn't bother them and it's an attitude we're seeing far too often with players. To much is given, much is expected.
