Third major leaguer named Trout in history (former Cub Steve Trout and his father Dizzy were the others.

Interesting timing, since he was slated to play in the Futures Game on Sunday.

Bet Scioscia falls in love with him and he never goes back to the minors.

He's 19, for another month. 19.

If he was on the Angels' A-ball team in Cedar Rapids (MWL), he'd be the second youngest guy on the team.

I'm so jealous. I wish the Cubs had a Mike Trout-esque prospect in the system.

like our SS?

castro is not mike trout

He's better.

At the moment yes, but Trout's projections are considerably higher. Most are thinking that he'll hit something like .300+avg, .380+obp, 20-25 HR, 40+SB and excellent defense in CF during his prime. That would make him the elite of the elite.

Be interesting to see who would rather have who:

Lets just have some fun with this...

Who would you rather have on your team in their prime? (Lets say their prime was 6 years long and these # are the avg of the 6 years)

A gold glover caliber CF who hits in the 20s in HR and 40 SB with .300-.310 AVG and .380-.390 OBP

or

An above average (not quite GG caliber) SS who hits 15-20 HR and 20 SB with .320-.330 AVG and .360-.370 OBP

Again... These are just projections. They could be better or worse... Just curious to see who people would rather have on their team if they had to pick one...

you just described Cesar Cedeno

and everybody gets projected for absurd numbers; isn't Justin Upton supposed to have a few 40-40 seasons by now?

He's on pace for 27HR and 25 SB with a near .900 OPS. Plus he's only 23. He'll likely never steal 40 bags, but 35+ HR is hardly out of the question.

Yeah like the Angels have never had a supposed super prospect who was going to change the game flame out in the past 5 years. Where for art thou Brandon Wood, Dallas McPhearson, and Jeff Mathis

What sound reasoning. According to that Castro should have sucked since Patterson, Pie etc didn't pan out. Trout is legit. He and Harper are on an entirely different level.

Plus he Forgot to mention Kendry Morales and Howie Kendrick. Plus Jered Weaver. Their prospects are no more apt to flame out then anyone else's.

Despite being 16 months older than Trout, I consider Castro a lot more raw when you consider he first hit the states just 3 years ago. He plays a more premium defensive position and has ~900 PAs of above average production at the major league level.

brandon wood and dallas mcpherson each had significant contact/plate discipline issues. jeff mathis was a nice prospect, but his OPS went from .844 to .763 to .671 in three years with hitter-friendly salt lake city, so it wasn't hard to see that he'd have some problems offensively. where's the hole in trout's game? that he only OPS'ed like .950 in AA as a 19 year old?

what were the holes in Matt Wieters' game?

i'm sure Trout will be a fine player, but it's annoying the insane tendency people have to project a hall of fame career for a guy before he's had to make the biggest jump in levels there is

guess this is a good time to ask, is it still a slam dunk verdict that Castro pales in comparison to Heyward, as was the prevalent opinion last year?

It's not a slam dunk, but it's far to early to reach any kind of final judgement. Heyward has been plagued by injuries and it's getting to the point where you wonder if that's just going to be the type of player he is throughout his career. It would be much easier to evaluate things if we could get even two or three months straight of a healthy Heyward.

If you want to compare the two, Wieters showed an elite bat and elite defense in the minors, but he didn't appear in the majors until 23. At age 19 Trout shows an elite bat, defense and speed. If Trout had a touch more power he'd have all 5 tools nearing elite status.

wieters is at least a better comparison, because he was regarded as one of the best prospects in baseball and hasn't hit like expected. brandon wood/dallas macpherson comps are just kind of silly because it wasn't hard to see how they might bust, and they were never among the top 2-3 prospects in the game.
