Yeah, the article is poorly written in that it seemingly assumes for the first half that the readers know that Joe Ricketts isn't the COO.

I'm all for the video. But what does it mean when there are exactly zero baseball players that are out of the closet? I mean, what kind of credibility to baseball players actually have here? It gets better. You can even play pro baseball so long as you remain in the closet.

Do you think any of the Cubs that participated in the video are homosexuals? What do you want them to do about it?

It's an ally thing, basically saying that not everyone out there is an intolerant bigot who will make your life a living hell. You don't have to be gay to say that.

I don't see your reasoning. And how do any of us know that there aren't any Cubs who are gay? The statistics would say there is a very good chance there is.

If the message is "don't be a bully, and if you are being bullied, hang in there", then that's fine.

If the message is "hey, if you're gay, it gets better", then the message is a bit hollow coming from baseball players because professional sports is one of the least welcoming environments for anyone who is gay.

It's a bit like an all white country club putting out a message to minorities that "it gets better". Even if the people putting out the message aren't bigots themselves.

Yeah, it's almost like a move like this is done almost entirely for P.R. or something.

*waits for the sarcasm to be missed*

Presumably, hopefully, the guys who participated in the video are the kind of players who wouldn't have a problem with a gay player. We need more people like that in sports so that the fear of being exposed is one that eventually goes away. I mean, you said it yourself, professional sports are one of the least welcoming places for gay people, so isn't a good thing when you have professional athletes doing something like this? Unless you can argue that the guys in the video are running around the locker room screaming "I hope no [expletive] faggots are in here because I'll [expletive] them up!!!" then it seems like a step in the right direction for a part of society that's still very much in the closet.

I mean, I don't understand your beef here. So you DON'T want them doing things like this?

No, I'm fine with the message. I'm just pointing out the irony of the message coming from athletes.

It's really only ironic if it's coming from homophobic athletes.

What do you want these respective players in the commercial to do if they're not homosexuals? The fact that other athletes are homophobic isn't something they can necessarily control.

Lie about their sexuality and say they are gay.

For credibility.

Maybe make a "From my experience you have no chance of making it in sports so why don't you go into theater or something more accepting" video.

If we really want them to be credible, the only solution is to turn "It Gets Better" into a combination of a support video and hardcore gay pornography.
