Daytona News-Journal's midseason grades - It's pretty much a fluff piece but there was this about Jae-Hoon Ha:

Jae-Hoon Ha has been nothing short of sensational in center field, and he personally deserves an A+. Scouts are raving about how much ground he covers and his arm strength.

Graham Hicks left the Peoria game with the trainer in the 3rd inning.

Boise Hawks Twitter:

Hawks 2nd baseman Vismeldy Bieneme day-to-day with a hand injury sustained on Opening Night...will be evaluated when we get to Boise

Kim had a 1-2-3 1st but gave up a run on a walk (3-2 pitch that *just* missed) and an RBI double down the third base line. Boise PBP guy says he's looked good. He's flashed a FB, curve and a change thus far and is getting tons of ground balls. No velocity readings yet.

Kim is struggling with his control in the 3rd. He's given up 2 walks in the inning.

Argh. Now a 2-RBI triple that just got past the reach of Contreras and DJ Fitzgerald took a bad route to the ball. Should have been a 1-RBI single but Fitzgerald really misplayed that.

3 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 6-1 GO-FO

DJ is really struggling this year. He's back at Boise to work on fundamentals. Hopefully he can put it together. Nice guy.

Wrong day, but do we have any idea how hard Wang, who pitched so well yesterday, throws?

I tend to think today is an aberration control-wise for Kim. AZPhil said earlier that he throws TOO MANY strikes and has commented about what good control he has.

Kim ended up with 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 7-2 GO-FO. He really was able to rack up ground outs; even 3 of the 4 hits (including the double and triple) were ground balls.

Austin Reed now in and has been good thus far. 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Former Cubs draftee Matt Stites is now in facing the Hawks.

Jackson with HR #7 only 170 official at bats. Cannot wait to see him up, his K rate does make me nervous but I see atleast Nate MccLouth in his good years at his potential, hopefully better.

Yeah, Austin Reed got rocked in his 4th inning of work. Only got 1 out and gave up all 4 of his runs there. Boise only got 2-hit.

He also has an RBI 2B, batting 3rd. He's not as hot as he was at the beginning of the season, but he's seemed out of the slump lately.

The reports on Wang that I recall had him in the low 90's, 90-91 area. It's hard to imagine that he has substantially improved upon that, so I figure it's probably low 90's still.

The only reading I heard on Wang during the radio broadcast was 92.

wow, what happened to Dolis? When he has a bad night, it usually means he walked some batters, but he walked none last night. I still have hope that this guy is going to be a quality major league reliever.
Posted

He's been good much more than he's been bad, I just chalk it up to the old "not having it today" addage......

On a side note though, I like that we've got some relievers in place that look like they're about ready to become major league fixtures for us. Between him, Rhoderick, and Kurcz, surely we wind up with 2 solid bullpen arms. Especially if you add Zych to that mix. If we can have a period where we've got 3-5 cheap, cost effective bullpen arms, it should help us immensely rounding out the major league squad without the Hendry specials like Grabow, Hawkins, etc......

Despite the fact that the relevant teams lost, which is pretty much meaningless, it was a very good day on the farm, at least for the hitters.

as for Dolis, its the first time I can recall him melting down like that since Ive been following him, and that will happen to the best of em at some point.

I'm hopeful that Dolis will eventually become an effective big-league reliever. But his splits in relief are 28H/11BB/14K/24IP. So that's a 1.6 WHIP with low K's and a lot of hits.

Seems to me like his traditional profile: hard heavy fastball but not very good control and not much else.

Thanks, guys. 90-92 sounds good to me. NOthing special, but not inadequate either. A large fraction of the good pitchers in the majors don't really throw much harder than that very often. If Wang has control and knows how to pitch, he can be a meaningful big-league prospect with 92-mph velocity.

Of course, it may be that the radio 92 was the one flukish 4-seamer that read that high, and that the actual fastballs that he was using effectively were mostly 87-89 types, who knows.

And granted also that most of the guys who are getting big-leaguers out with 92-or-less velocity could throw harder than that when they were minor leaguers. If Z was a 20-year-old prospect given his current velocity, he wouldn't be the prospect he was back then when he threw 98.

Toonster, why do you say it's "hard to image that he has substantially improved" upon low 90's? I assume because he's short, listing at 6'0"? If he was 90-91 as a teenager, and now he's 20, apart from his limited height it seems fairly believable when guys add some speed when they turn 20, 21, and 22.
