I did say seemingly. And in my defense, I'd long since blocked out the fact that there was still a baseball season going on by mid September of last year. Besides, all they were doing at that point was screwing us out of a top 5 draft pick. We could have had Rendon, the bastards.

You also said mythical, so I think you're covered.

9 games out. Game thread up before midnight. Let's win 3.

I'm really, really excited for tomorrow's game and that's probably the first time I've felt this way since opening day. Keep it up Cubbies.

could this be that mythical 3 game win streak thats seemingly eluded the Cnbs since 2008?

Some people's memory isn't any longer than their whatdoyacallit. How could you forget this little 6 game gem just last season ???

Gm# Date Opponent Score Starter Opp Starter
144 Mon 09/13 @ St. Louis N 5- 1 Samardzija Garcia
145 Tue 09/14 @ St. Louis N 7- 2 Wells Wainright
146 Wed 09/15 @ St. Louis N 7- 3 Zambrano Carpenter
147 Fri 09/17 @ Florida N 2- 0 Dempster Sanabia
148 Sat 09/18 @ Florida N 5- 3 Coleman Sanchez
149 Sun 09/19 @ Florida 13- 3 Samardzija Miller

Some (aka darn near all) stopped paying attention in July last year. Was Samardzija a starter last year in Sept? I didn't even know that.

Not to mention the fact that we only gave up 1 and 3 runs in those 2 starts. Sure does look like an ugly rotation there.

If we were to somehow sweep the Yankees, I'm pretty sure just about everyone would be drawn back in. That said, the problem I see is not that we're 9 games back, but rather that 4 teams are in front of us, not 1 or 2.

Problem isn't 9 games back or behind 4 teams. It's being not that good of a team.

Let's worry about getting back to 500. If we can't accomplish that it really doesn't matter how many teams are ahead of us. If they can put together a good stretch here and get within a few games of 500 by the all-star break that would be a huge moral victory. Getting a few guys back from injury around then or before hopefully, and maybe this team might make a little run. A lot to hope for, but with nothing else going on sports wise it is all I have to root for at this point. So go Cnbs!

I guess I am the only one wanting a continuous tank and higher draft position then?

Yes, you're the only one who prefers the team start playing terribly again rather than play out of their minds and get back in the race.

In order for that to happen, it would have to mean that our valuable major league players would have to be bad, which would be bad for their projections for the immediate future and make it much harder to attract key free agents in the coming offseason.

Yes, but which one is more realistic?

And once again someone pretends like the baseball draft works like the football or basketball draft.

Is that what I just did?!? Thank you for pointing that out to me all seeing eye of my mind. Tell me, would you have rather this team had that remarkable run last summer and get that little short stop kid, or maybe a slightly higher pick?

The middle.

Personally I prefer seeing the Cubs win games regardless of the larger context, so no, I wasn't sitting there thinking "oh man, these late season wins are costing them higher draft picks!" The MLB draft is such a crap shoot that unless there's the rare slam dunk prospect waiting I don't root for the Cubs to "tank." Good scouting will net you good prospects. And no, I don't have any problem with them deciding on "that little short stop kid."

I'm of the feast or famine mentality. My preference is to go on a monster tear and climb into contention, but if that's not in the Cards, I'd prefer to just tank, trade expiring contracts for whatever we can get, and score a top 5 pick, which I'm well aware isn't as valuable as an NFL or NBA pick, but still more valuable than a 10-20 pick. None of that 2005/2009 mediocrity nonsense.
