man the cubs are giving crazy money to everyone. again, rather have them blowing big money on amateur talent than the john grabows of the world, but i don't think anyone saw dunston as a late first round money type.

I'm pretty sure that I saw Dunston Jr. getting some consideration for the supplemental if signability wasn't an issue. Still not 1st round money, but not a gross overpayment and definately a legit talent.

I don't know if I can stand the rumor mill anymore. Inside of 7 hours to go before we should know for sure. Edited by CubsWin

Most of the speculation seemed to assume that he would be a first round pick in 3 years if he went to college, but they figured nobody would want to sign him to that sort of deal until they saw him develop a little more.

hopefully there's a clause in his contract that nobody on nsbb is allowed to call him vogelbomb.

hopefully there is one where he has to be less fat.

He was looking pretty fit in the last video I saw of him.

These draft picks need to sign and get they asses to the SHOW and make some real money. Geez. It's annoying already.

I'm planning on using some sort of Hitchhiker's Guide reference.

Unless he has lost weight he has the look of a Vogon, that's for sure.

really it's up to him. if he's content with making $1.6m from playing baseball and letting himself go, then he's not going to be anything. hopefully he has enough sense to know that he can make way, way more money if he works hard on his fitness.

Just want to echo this. The more recent video I've seen of him he looked great, he'll always be big but he certainly didn't look fat. He looked much more trimmed down than in previous video I had seen him in. I think he's worked hard on triming down body fat.

Everything I've read points to him having a pretty intense work ethic, so I'm not all that worried about him letting himself go at this point.

ricketts is going to be getting a LOT of mean text messages from bud selig.

Yeah, he's gonna be in the doghouse. So if Maples is signed, will it be for seven figures as well?

the rumor was that maples had a $2m price tag, so it would be extremely shocking if he didn't sign for seven figures. especially considering that the cubs have been meeting or exceeding pretty much everyone's price tag.

Yowza. Hasn't Bud been pushing for a hard slotting system? This has to drive him crazy.

While I'm loving all of this draft spending, it can't help but make me nervous about the "reports" about the organization being wary about spending big money on FA, like they view it as an either/or situation.

Yeah, that thought is definitely lurking in the back of my mind.

$1.2MM for Dunston, Jr.? I didn't realize he was considered that good of a player.

He's got a high ceiling and might have gone top 3 rounds if he were signable (I think Keith Law really liked him) but he's definitely not valued by anyone as a 1st rounder. That said, this was what it was going to cost to buy him out of his Vandy commitment.
