he's a bad, old pitcher who shouldn't even be pitching for a major league team, let alone throwing important 8th innings. i guess that's proof that even the great tony larussa puts too much emphasis on stupid ERA.

Yeah, no one from my side can understand why Batista keeps getting the call. But hey, he's better than Ryan Franklin.

Cubs have not been outhit since the 11-2 blowout at the hands of the DBacks on April 28. If they lose tonight, they will be 5-5 during that 10 game stretch.

well they don't walk enough and don't hit for much power, so with those things in mind, it's not that hard to lose games when you outhit the opponent.

I can understand the argument about not hitting for power, but do you mean that they would win more games if they substitute some of their hits for more walks?

Any further word on the severity of Soto's groin strain? If he goes to the DL, I sure hope Quade doesn't play Hill everyday like Lou did.

Actually, many of those losses they have walked more than the opponent as well. The number of extra base hits is very low.

However, the main issues are:

1. Horrible approaches with the pitcher in trouble.

2. Bad defense (mental and physical).

3. Bad baserunning.

4. Grounding into double plays.

i mean that the main way they get on base is via hits and they aren't getting on base much besides getting hits. it's not like they're getting 12 hits a game and also walking 6 times. if your team hits a bunch of singles and doesn't do much else on offense, you can easily lose games where you have more hits than your opponent.

I think he means they don't draw walks so there are not as many base runners when they do get hits, nor do they work the count when guys are on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Ramirez was 3 for 3 but came up in that situation and looks like he is trying to hit a crap ball low and away 600 feet. The result, an infield fly. If he takes the pitch, it is ball one and who knows what happens

This team is an absolute joke when it comes to the mental aspect of the game. I guess it wasn't all Lou's fault. :D

Yes, but 5 out of 10?

EDIT: In only two of the 5 losses have the Cubs drawn fewer walks than the opponent.

It also means you are among the league leaders in team batting average but near the bottom in runs scored.

Problem is, wellington Castillo hasnt done much in Iowa, Max Ramirez is a Houston Astro, and Steve Clevenger probably projects to be slightly better than Koyie Hill. Maybe the can bring up Mike Brenley just to put a smile on pops face.

I agree, as a whole that is a problem. I'm talking about the last 10 games.

EDIT: And I think what makes it so frustrating is that many times our hitters will work a great count and then swing at a horrible pitch on 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, etc. That definitely contributes to the low walk totals.

EDIT2: Horrible approaches covers walks. Should have made that more clear.

i'd start a fecal league standings thread, but i don't even think the cubs will do great in that either. just a mediocre and boring team.

Know what you mean, I think we'll have to grin and bear it this season maybe even next. But, and I know it sounds like a broken record, there's better times ahead. Before long we'll see Jackson, Vitters, Campana might pan out, to team up with Castro, Soto...

Sadly, mediocre, boring teams dont get top 10 draft picks, rather somewhere between 15-20, which are used on guys like Hayden Simpson. mediocre, boring teams also dont have a July fire sale to beef up their farm systems.

You speak the truth man. Sadly.

Yes, it's so sad that the Cubs haven't been perpetual cellar-dwellers a la the Royals or the Pirates to stockpile a bunch of high draft picks. That would have so much better, watching them struggle to not lose 100 games each season.

FFS, this isn't basketball or football. I can't believe there are regular posters here who seem to honestly think that not having a lot of top 10 picks IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL is a serious detriment to not being able to develop all-star players.

Nobody wants them to suck, however, if July rolls around and were like 7 games out and in 4th place, Id just as soon they know when to hold em, and know when to fold em, and by this, I mean rather than trying some desperate attempt to claw their way into contention by trading for some middling lefty for the bench that they trade any expiring contracts, like Fukuome, Pena, Grabow, and Aramis if they dont intend on picking up his option and get what they can.

Still wouldn't prevent them from drafting all-stars if they didn't have a fire sale.
