Is it still too early to be concerned? He has given up 8 HRs already and seems to run out of gas every time he hits the 5th inning. Injured?
He's obviously broken. At least 7 runs, maybe more, including a grand slam in 1/3 inning. The Cubs just can't afford for this crap to continue.

sure they can, they're not going anywhere this year so what does it matter?

This is worrisome. At this point you have to think something is physically wrong. It could be a very long year if we're going to depend on the offense to carry the pitching.

I wonder what it is. His velocity seems to be there. The main problem is his slider seems to have failed him completely.

Why is it that when a pitcher stinks.....he's hurt? How about he just blows at the moment?

Because pitchers get hurt a lot, and it's a logical conclusion to draw when a typically reliable pitcher falls off of a cliff.

That and Dempster has never been this bad for this long in his Cubs tenure as a starter.

Dempster just needs to focus on baseball instead of his stupid Harry Caray impressions and his sick daughter, amirite?

In all seriousness, he looks lost out there. Maybe his magical 3 year run as a top line starting pitcher are just over. It's not like anyone expected this much out of him anyway. As long as this putrid run is enough to convince Jimbo (or whoever is the GM at the time) to let him walk after his contract is up, I'm OK with it. Cubs were going to suck this year anyway and Dempster is just adding on.

He has a $14 million player option for 2012, right?

If he can pull it together, its possible that he doesnt excersise it, which I wouldnt be too opposed to, not because I dont like him, but because it would be a solid chunk of change added to what already promises to be a very nice amount of available cash in the offseason, but if he continues doing what hes doing now, its pretty much a guarantee he excercises it.

Next person to say it's inevitable that we'd/we'll suck this year is getting cut.

It was pretty obvious a long time ago.

It was obvious our top 3 pitchers would suck and our next 2 would get hurt? What else you got Kreskin?

It was obvious this wasn't a good team, exactly how they would get there was always in question. But pitcher inneffectiveness and health concerns were always at the top of the list with this crew. It's also not the only reason they have been outscored by....., really, 35 runs already? Ouch.

It didn't help that the new manager needs to keep guys going every outing from opening day until they die. That was kind of unexpected.

Z and Demp for sure, but I don't see Garza. He's been pretty awesome.

That being said, your point stands.

Our starters have a 6.39 ERA. You were concerned our starters would have a 6.39 ERA on the season? You were concerned we'd lose 2 of our starting pitchers after their first starts??

Well I meant collectively since everyone (except for the omniscent like gooney and Truffle (I HOPE WE LOSE EVERY GAME FOR A GOOD DRAFT PICK!)) figured our top 3 starters were locks to be above average at worst. And while Garza's peripherals have been phenomenal, they haven't translated to success on the mound as of yet.

I getcha. One could argue that Demp has sucked enough for all three of them.

7 runs in 1/3 of an inning LOLOL

While most people (myself included) don't have serious hopes for contending this year, it is still early in the season. When you have the White Sox and Twins playing below .400 ball, 10 players in the NL batting .349 or better, Weaver at 6-0 with an ERA under 1, and Albert Pujols hitting .250, you know there's lots of games left.

I definitely thought that pitching as a whole would be our strength. Nobody was ever going to confuse it with the Phillies or Giants rotations, but they should have been, and still should be very solid, especially if we had Wells and Cashner, top to bottom we were very solid. Add in the back of the pen, and our pitching was looking good. Also, of Samamrdzjia can continue to not be awful, Carpenter can come up and dominate like he has been in Iowa, and we can get Guzman back, that is a very nice pen.

I thought that starting pitching would be a problem, but I didn't expect it would be Dempster. I wasn't all that enamoured with Garza and I didn't like who the Cubs gave up to get him, but I didin't think he would be this bad.

I thought they'd suck though.
