Why is everyone suggesting Louisville is a better job than Illinois?

Arena, facilities, money plus good tradition/history and a national name.

they also have the largest basketball budget in the country, although one could argue that they get the least production from every dollar spent than any other top 25 program.

Given that budget, the fact they have Pitino and the hoops crazy nature of the state, it's pretty shocking they haven't been a lot more successful in recent years.

Wait, you don't honestly believe that Croce was your third choice, do you?

I think he was, are you familiar with Mike Thomas' history with Ohio?

At worst I think he was #4 or #5, if you believe that Grant was targeted but preemptively denied interest.

UK went after Donovan 1st and likely Few at Gonzaga, Izzo, and Barnes at Texas before Billy Clyde. There were rumors about Calipari but neither side was too interested at the time.

Look at this old thread:

Nice call on Crean, Exile.

[expletive]. Clicking on that thread I read Exile's comment about the rumors he was hearing that Kruger was going to take the Iowa job. Which then led me to a discussion about how Lickliter could be considered for the IU job (when Crean was hired) and how awesome of a coach he was. Which then led me to the Alford leaving/Lickliter hired thread.

If Groce is the absolute right guy and has great success, does he stick around long-term? Fair or not, the way Kruger and Self left Illinois I just wonder about that. Different situations for sure...Henson stuck around for a long time but after his Final Four team he kind of hit a plateau of sorts.

Why would you wonder about that because of Kruger and Self? Try harder next time.

I don't understand what's going on here but it seems to me that illiniguy is grasping at straws

How? I think its a top 15 program. Even if all of the teams on abucks list were better than us. That still puts us at 15. I mean sure his list is awful, he didn't include Indiana in it, but even using it we are right at 15.

Clearly the job isn't that great otherwise they wouldn't have crapped the bed on the coaching search, but you keep changing conversations between historical rankings, current ratings and how good the job is.

By getting our third choice? Did Gunether crap the bed when he got Self? Because he wasn't his first choice. We still got a young coach that was in demand and would have been in more demand in one year.

Our beat reporter in Champaign put him at a tie for best odds with Shaka after the round of 64. Just because people in Iowa haven't heard of him doesn't mean he wasn't on our AD's radar. Our AD has running water too.

With the BTN and the stability of the conference while all the other craziness is going on, I don't think you'll see many B1G coaches leaving unless it's to a top-5 job or somewhere they have a major past history.

*Penn State, Nebraska, Northwestern excluded.

Well obviously there's no way of knowing for sure unless someone finds something through a freedom of information search, but do you really think he had Groce ahead of guys like Grant and Miller?

Definitely, since there was no word about Grant and Miller coming from the university. The only reason they waited so long to talk to Groce was that Ohio was still playing until last Saturday.

I doubt at any point he considered Miller a possibility. I don't think he was all that high on Grant.

I think he had a good concept of who would listen and who wouldn't. If Miller was a non-starter do you really consider him a "choice?"

Was Billy Donovan a choice? Izzo? Matta?

The only reason I mentioned Grant and Miller was because I thought I read that they reached out to them, Hamilton and Romar. Maybe I just got the Miller thing from you guys talking about him though.

Miller was a fool's hope, and it's doubtful in the extreme it was even a possibility. I think it was a case of Illini fans creating hope. Hamilton is too old and Romar isn't all that good.

Grant is a name that was tossed around quite a bit, but to what extent he was considered/interested is pretty hazy. There's a lot of bad information and conjecture floating around and obscuring just what was really going on. Here's an article that clear some of it up, but not a whole lot.

It's confirmed and completely awful. Sigh.

weber and self in the same state. good luck with all that.

He wants pain. Self is gonna take it at him.
