IU has finished dead last in both major sports for what, four years running?

They didn't do anything fast.

If the NCAA had balls the penalties for IUs cheating would've lasted longer. Let's not forget the basketball program was in the dumps because they hired a known cheater, and he *gasp* cheated again.

First, IU has finished dead last for one year running in basketball (last -- next to last -- last over the previous three seasons).

Second, as to IU's punishment -- which was deserved -- please compare and contrast the infractions and on-court/field repurcussions for Memphis basketball, Ohio State basketball, USC football, Ohio State football, etc. I think you'll find IU suffered severely for its sin -- and more severely for some more egregious infractions. (Lest we also not forget that Purdue was not banned from post-season play for arranging an improper $4,000 loan to a recruit.)

Sorry, thanks for correcting my statement. IU has only averaged the worst finish in the league over those years, while finishing last most of the time.

Also, you're bringing up one isolated issue from 1995? Really? I mean it's only been 17 years and it pales in comparisson to Sampson and what IU wilfully brought on themselves.

Ostensibly paying a player to secure his commitment pales in comparison to hiring a coach that makes too many phone calls (then that coach making too many phone calls)? Sorry, can't agree.

Further, the Sampson debacle was the one infraction IU has had in the modern era of basketball. IU had been the cleanest (competitive) major college basketball team for over a half century. The hiring of Sampson was the anomaly, not the norm.

I'm just dissapointed we allegedly cheated to get Luther Clay instead of Eric Gordon.

Do you think Tom Crean showing up to see him unexpectedly, like a freakish stalker, had a negative impact?

The real question is will Purdue beat Indiana again in this decade? I'm not too sure about that one. :-k

Well, if you look at the numbers Purdue hasn't had much difficulty beating Indiana throughout the series. Hell, IU could win every game for the rest of the decade and Purdue would still have the series lead.

True . . . but the player's departure did impact the NCAA's decision. Again, after those players had left the NCAA's decision came down in November of 2008, and noted: "the committee did note the current condition of the program."

Which is insane. If Savannah State committed violations, would they actually reward them?

i'm beginning to wonder if indiana will have a letdown game this year. i don't see it.

Maybe Illinois and Purdue can duke it out in the NIT championship.

One decent year and a half decade and you run your mouths, hard to believe no one likes your fan base.

I lose at least 2 or 3 hours of sleep each night thinking about that tbh.

I imagine you just think about the last three years basketball team and it puts you right back to sleep.

It also seems that the most obnoxious IU fans were either not alive the last time they won a championship, or at best were small children.

edit: we should do a poll of the IU fans! How old were you guys in 1987?

No, actually I watch one of Bruce's fiery pregame speeches and it does the trick.

I remember the 1987 team quite well. Which is to say, I remember most of Purdue's disappointing early exits under Keady too. The Cheaney teams were pretty damn good too, the slippage under Knight didn't really start until 1993-94 and even then, that team made the Sweet 16. Once the Patterson/Reed/Miller/Hodgson class hit town, it was all downhilll from there.

* - although technically I don't think Hodgson even played a game for IU, he transfered to Rutgers IIRC.

Even at that, Luther basically did nothing for Purdue and ended up at Rhode Island where he almost got them in the Final Four? I seem to recall them making the Elite Eight his senior year...or maybe it was the Sweet Sixteen.

I was 7 and don't remember crap about either Purdue or IU basketball as a 7 year old. You get my point though. Princeton has 28 National Championships in Football, you think anyone cares about those anymore?

That is kind of an extreme example though. IU has won the hoops title 3 times in my lifetime. The 1981 game I might have watched but I don't remember it. I was 5 at that time and I do remember Reagan getting shot that day and I'm 100% sure my dad & brother watched the IU-UNC game that night but I have no memory of it. I was 11 when IU beat Syracuse but I basically watched every game that season.

Keady vs RMK ended up basically a draw anyways. Most of Purdue's margin in the head-to-head series was from pre-WWII days so really you are just arguing in a circle man, lol.

To me the best I've seen Purdue do in my lifetime was the 3-peat years and yeah, I think at least one of those was recalled after the fact by the Clay violations but still, Purdue at that time was nasty. Not pretty, but they won games. I had courtside seats when Chad Austin hit the floater to beat Indiana in overtime in 1996-97...and I had pretty good seats when Jaraan Cornell basically beat IU in overtime in 1998-99...I think IU ended up winning 2 out of 5 in Bloomington when I went to school there. We beat Purdue my freshman year when Charlie Miller pulled some crazy dunk out his behind and then Recker's freshman year we won...otherwise I think that is it. I'm still fairly bitter about IU's performance when I was actually on campus. Eh.

Good god, I just watched his fist speech again. Jesus H. It was our first ever shot at a title and that's what he came up with.....

That Illinois team was damn good though, I don't know that it mattered what Bruce said there. Not that I'm even sure that pregame speeches matter than much. It is interesting how Michigan does it now, I notice they have some assistant coach handle the pregame speeches instead of the head coach. Whether it matters or not, I don't know.

Prolly not, but good lord. "five fingers don't hurt, but together they make a fist. Take these four together and.... Make a fist and hit them. It's the most powerful." pan to Luther trying not laugh.

And I'm resigned to the fact we will never have another season like that. Why couldn't UNC let us get one? Bastards.
