I like how IU played last night but yeah, I'm not going to get too excited until we beat some tougher teams. Last year we started 6-0 and 9-2 and well, that got us a whole lot of nothing. But having said all of that, I am definitely optimistic these guys can hit the 18 win mark.

What happened to when Purdue played defense?

It's not just lights out shooting by Iona either (they are shooting at a hight percentage). They're getting wide open looks like VCU. Everyone in the country has watched that tape and Painter has to make adjustments.

Purdue survives again. Good lord. To be fair, Pomery has Iona ranked at 57, so they're not chumps. They're a good squad... but that was some pickup league defense out there.

I'm not too impressed with a lot of the Big Ten. I'm starting to wonder if Iowa has an outside shot at finishing in top half (at like 6th or so).

Outside of Ohio State it's a [expletive] crapshoot man.

Big West with the upset!

Long Beach is a tournament team this year, no?

Seeing as how they couldn't win the Big West with virtually this same team the last couple years and the team that has won it both of those years (UC Santa Barbara) returns its best two players, I'd say not necessarily. They'll be in the mix, but its far from a sure thing.

Iowa beat 3 bad teams like they should. They play a decent Creighton team on Sunday, should be fun to say where they are right now.

Creighton's really good. Huge win if Iowa pulls it off.

It's kind of a measuring stick game for each team I think as they've both looked good against bad teams for the most part. They play in Des Moines so I'm kind of curious as to who brings more fans.

Yep I think 5 or 6-11 are all fairly interchangeable at this point.

Illinois coasted against an overmatched opponent again. Next stop: avoiding a Utah-Bradley level embarrassment in Cancun against Richmond and Rutgers/Illinois State.

There will be a lot more Iowa fans. I'm heading over to it, pretty pumped. It's been 3 really bad teams to this point but yeah this is clearly the best Iowa team since 2007 which isn't saying much but Basabe, Cartwright and Marble haven't really played well yet. Nice to have some depth so the starters don't all have to play 30 minutes against cupcakes. No starter played more than 20 tonight.

May looks a hell of a lot better but he looked good in the non-conference last year too.

I think more than that are interchangeable.

Probably. I just look at Purdue, Michigan and Wisconsin being a cut above the mid-tier by the time conference play gets going. Not sure what to make of MSU.

Ha, well, we didn't even have the same top-3 after Ohio State. I just assumed Michigan State was included in that; they have the second most talent in the league. If they figure out the point guard spot -- which is very important in Izzo's system -- they figure to be quite good. As for your preferred three:

-Purdue? Hummel is great (when healthy). Their backcourt is good and deep. The rest of the frontcourt . . . uh, well, did I mention Hummel is really good?

-Michigan? They strike me as the prototypical overrated-because-of-a-good-tournament-game team. They lost fourteen games last year and went .500 in the league. They also lost their best player (Darius Morris). Yet, they're ranked highly because they gave Duke a great run the tournament -- but did Duke not get throat-stomped the next game? I like Beilein and think Tim Hardaway, Jr. is a breakout candidate. But I'm not sure they're clearly better than everyone below.

-Wisconsin? Probably, bar Ohio State, the most likely to finish near the top of the conference. However, I think there are far more questions here than normal. They've usually had their fair share of 4-, or even 5-, star players; this year they have only one (Jared Berggren -- so, ostensibly, two with Jordan Taylor). I know I'm more lukewarm here than most, though.

Those three teams may end up finishing 2-3-4, but I don't think there is that much separating them. For one, Illinois has more talent than all three of them (as mentioned, so does Michigan State).

MSU- Yeah and as far as PG I think Green is almost the default guy. I'm probably skewing too negative based on how they've looked against two top 6 teams. I'm just not sure I see a big improvement from next year. Nix and Payne don't impress me. It will come down to how well Wood fits in, how good Dawsen is and Appling taking a jump.

Michigan- They lost Morris and you never know with freshman PG's but Burke is supposed to be really good. I'm looking more at natural progression with Hardaway, Morgan, Smotrycz and returning all of those annoying shooters.

Wisconsin- They shouldn't be that good but I'm not going to analyze it much deeper than Bo Ryan and Jordan Taylor. Most of the replacements have been in the program for a few years and will probably turn into studs out of nowhere.

If you use recruiting rankings the most talented teams are Ohio state and Illinois. Illinois has like 7 or 8 top 100 players. Not that I think we will be all that good.

Pomeroy has Purdue losing to Temple today by 1. Big game early in the season for Purdue. Plus regardless of whether they win or lose they'll be facing either Alabama or Wichita St. on Sunday. Some great opportunities to build their tournament resume if they can start playing some defense.
