For the sake of fun, I think we should just look at some ex-Cub prospects in their post Cub life. My favorites.

Nate Spears, 2B (of the Corey Patterson trade) is now in the Boston organization and last year spent the season playing 2B in AA doing his best Ben Zobrist impression. He hit .272/.380/.463 with TWENTY home runs, he hit 15 in the four years he spent in the Cubs organization. He also had 84 (plus additional 11 HBP) walks, compared to just 93 strikeouts and stole 13 bases to 1 caught stealing. Not to mention 30 doubles and 4 triples. Yowza. Granted, he's 25 but like I said, he's doing his Ben Zobrist impression. He (allegedly) throws in good defense to boot. He's an NRI invite to Sawx camp this year.

On a side note, former prospect extraordinare Joel Guzman hit 33 homers in the EL and was miraculously still 25.

Darin Downs, LHP, has spent some time in the Rays system. He spent 2009 as a starter in High A primarily, where he went 12-6 with a 2.23 ERA with a whopping 120:27 K:BB in 133 IP before his season ended short with a liner to the head (clocked at 103, lucky to be alive). The Rays moved him back into the bullpen for the 2010 season and he went 12-4 with a 2.95 ERA and a 102:32 K:BB in just 88 innings. Downs just turned 26 a few months ago (and he's been around seemingly forever), and recently was a minor league signee with an NRI by the Marlins.

Anyone got some more?

I wonder how Darrin Downs' shoulder plates are doing.

Once the cynicism wears off and more news develops from spring training, this post will have interesting updates. I am always curious about ex-Cub minor league players. I read where Dan McDaniel was released, by another team, in the last month. He had so much promise at the end of 2009.

That was one of my bigger disappointments in recent years (along with a personal favorite, Jovan Rosa). With Rosa, at least I could sort of expect it, as he was a kid where you had to project some power development, and it just never came around. He started forcing the issue and got his swing out of whack. With McDaniel, that one caught me out of the blue, which was why I was so tentative to jump on the McNutt bandwagon for awhile. I mean, it's easy to forget that at Boise, this was a big bodied kid who was touching mid-90's, could get sink on his fastball, had a solid curve, decent slider, decent change (to the best of my recollection). His stuff was just not as good at the upper levels, and IIRC, reports suggested that he was only touching low 90's with a 4-seamer. That said, what was so disappointing was that McDaniel got off to a good start at Daytona before his back problems. Anyhow, he was with Oakland last year and back in the NWL, but wasn't much. Decent K rate, but control was pretty bad.

Anyone know what happened to catcher Carlos Perez? He was a mildly promising low level kid, was cut. Don't recall if he was picked up by anyone. Had a decent approach at the plate. Was surprised when he was cut.

The Red Sox have been impressed with Rich Hill's new sidearm delivery this spring.

"It makes left-handed hitters give," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Wednesday. "He creates that angle, especially with the breaking ball, and the idea is to make good left-handed hitters give a little bit." Hill hasn't enjoyed much success in the big leagues recently, but he has a legitimate shot at claiming a lefty specialist spot in Boston's Opening Day bullpen.

Hak-Ju Lee opened the season on Charlotte's DL because he has chicken pox.

A far stretch as far as "prospects" go, but anyway:

Nick Martin (LHP 17th round pick in 2001 - dropped out at Daytona in 2004 after injury) signed with ADO of the Dutch league, who start their season next Thursday.

Chris Mowday, a teammate for Daytona in 2004, will be back with RCH (also in the Dutch league) for a second year.

al alburquerque was called up today by the tigers. wasn't he terrible in the low minors for us like 2 years ago???

He was actually pitching very well for Daytona when he was traded. He was just one of a million relief pitchers so he wasn't missed much. He didn't have a great year in AA last year though.

Guyer's hitting .356/.413/.616 with 4 home runs in 73 ABs for AAA Durham.

Weird, I just checked his stats an hour ago because I read about Cerda and always associate the 2 for some reason.

At least Archer has a high ERA and TT's favorite player this side of Carl Pavano is putting up a 459 OPS.

WHAT!?! You mean it matters that he spent four years at Daytona and Tennessee before he started hitting? Heresy! He'd be one of the best hitting catchers in the game right now!

I wish I had spread my Chirinos incredulity farther on the internets so I could go on an I-told-you-so spree.

Seriously though, you're gonna leave your wife for Pavano.
