Some of the rumors had the Rangers offering to pay half of the $48 million owed over 3 years.

Michael Young + David Murphy + $18 million (spread over 2012-2013) for Baker + Fukudome.

Maybe. If the Rangers kick in that much money, might be hard to say no.

Would the difference between DeWitt and Young make up for Colvin getting 500 at bats? I feel like a DeWitt/Baker platoon at second would be more valuable in case Colvin slumps badly as a regular.

Then again, the front office loves Colvin so much, I could see this happening as a way to give him all the starts.

I would rather have O'Day or Davis over Murphy. Add Silva into the deal as well.

Or as was discussed before, Soriano and Young have similar contracts(Soriano 1 year longer).

How about

Soriano, Baker for Young?

Young seems slightly more useful defensively as he could spell 3B and 2B with the occasional start at SS.

No way the Rangers throw Murphy into a deal like that. If it's basically just Fukudome for Young: If I'm Hendry, I'm not doing it. Those 2 extra years of Young's deal could be the money that keeps us from getting a Fielder or a Pujols possibly. If Ricketts commits himself to spending big on a 1B next year no matter what, then go for it. Otherwise, the extra money next year is more valuable than Young is.

On the face of it, I think this would be a very good deal for the Cubs. We'd be paying Young and Murphy around $10 to provide 4 wins a year. And even though I'm one of the bigger Kosuke fans on the board, I think he and Baker are well worth giving up to get that. I don't know that the Rangers would do it, though.

The only concern from our perspective is Young's age. He'll be 34 this year, so a dropoff is very possible even though he's remained very steadily a 2.4+ WAR player throughout his career. It may just be a fluke, but his LD% was down to 18.5% from his career average of 24.1% (22.4% last year). It's been in decline since 2007, but I'm not sure how much that means.

That's a good point. If there's a choice to be made, I'd much rather have (skinny)Fielder/DeWitt than Young/? at first.

Probably not. Young's marginal value over are current options is about the same as Fukudome's marginal value over whoever replaces him, considering the likelihood any of Soriano, Byrd, or Colvin flop this year. Add in the additional years on Young's contract, and that it's not a win even for this year, and I don't really have interest.

I advocated this trade, but the more I think about it, the more I think it depends on your view on DeWitt. If he's a guy you can see getting to be a 1.5-2 WAR player pretty soon, it's probably not worth adding Young. If, however, you don't see DeWitt getting any better, then Young is a 1-2 WAR upgrade at second and can much more easily be spun off next year for prospects if he doesn't fall off a cliff since we'll just be paying him $7 mil a year.

Murphy is listed as their 4th OF and Fukudome could fill that role. I agree that Hendry shouldn't do Fukudome for Young straight up, but that isn't what I posted. Young is basically untradable unless the Rangers pick up a big portion of his contract. Young at $14 million over 2 years isn't going to stop the Cubs from spending big on Pujols/Fielder if they decide to go after either one.

It could, especially if Ricketts doesn't advocate ballooning payroll anytime soon. Less than $10 mil a year is a pretty standard contract at this point, but it's still a significant portion of money.

Young requested a trade today. In the end, I don't see the Rangers finding a taker though. I don't think they'll be wanting to eat very much of the deal and I definitely don't see teams lining up to pay anything close to 16 mill a year for the next 3 for a 34 year old. I'll be surprised if he gets moved.

Michael Young told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News that he requested a trade because he has been "misled and manipulated" by the Rangers.

"I've kept a low profile out of respect for the team, the coaching staff, my family and the fans because I didn't want to put anybody on an unnecessary roller-coaster," said Young. "Now, I think it's important to address the inaccurate portrayal that is being painted. The suggestion that I've simply had a change of heart and asked for a trade is a manipulation of the truth. I want to be traded because I've been misled and manipulated and I'm sick of it." Strong words. Some have suggested that Young could still open spring training with the team, but that now sounds like a scenario both sides will want to avoid.

Starting to get ugly. On an unrelated note, Rotoworld has a new design that confused the hell out of me because I just checked their website 30 minutes ago and it wasn't like that

Apparently, the Cubs are not one of the 8 teams to which Young agreed to be traded.

MONDAY, 10:34pm: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has the list of eight teams Young is willing to accept a trade to: Cardinals, Yankees, Twins, Astros, Rockies, Dodgers, Angels, and Padres. The team has said they are dealing with just those eight teams right now.

Interesting list. It would suck if the Cards got him, but while their struggling to retain Pujols, I doubt they can afford to take on any extra money, and they dont have the prospects to make the deal worth the Rangers eating enough money, unless they were willing to add Shelby Miller, but then again, if Rasmus wants out, Young for Rasmus might not be the worst trade in the world as long as the Rangers send over enough cash. Between Freese, Theriot, and Schumaker, Im sure the Cards would love an upgrade at 1 of those 3 positions. The Yankees have nowhere to put him. The Astros are in a mess of a rebuilding phase, so he wouldnt make sense for them given his age and salary. Twins and Padres would probably be good fits for him, but neither team is known for taking on other teams big contracts. The Angels just took an awful contract off the Blue Jays hands, so I dont think theyd want to eat another one. I guess they could use some help on the right side of the infield, offensively. THis leaves the Dodgers and Rockies as decent fits.

Michael Young's hubris meter is off the charts if he thinks he can demand a trade and that teams are so falling over themselves to pick up his horrendous contract, his horrendous defense and his horrendous away splits that he can selectively choose when new team he wants to play for.

The only way I do the trade is a straight up swap for Soriano.

This came from Rangers insider Jamey Newberg today:

Prediction:

Michael Young will be traded to the Chicago Cubs, with Darren O’Day, Chris Davis, and cash, for outfielder Marlon Byrd, catcher Welington Castillo, and righthander Su-Min Jung.

In December.

Unless he takes a liking to his 2011 role here, and 10-5’s his way out of any potential trades.

I'm a little confused by the "In December" part of that quote. What does that mean? Was that a rumor back in December when we were rumored to get Davis?
