Whenever I hear Todd Wellemeyer, all I think about is Harold Reynolds and John Kruk on Baseball Tonight after his first start, saying that while the Cubs have a lot of great young arms (Prior, Wood, Zambrano and Cruz), Wellemeyer very well might be the best.

We should've done this a year or two ago when Lou was around and still cared. He might've strangled Todd on the mound.

Does anyone remember how badass his MLB debut was?

He came on in like the 15th inning of a game back in 2003, where the Cubs were leading (in Milwaukee) and struck out the side, allowing the Cubs to sweep the Brewers.

Yep. That game was awesome.

I attended that game. Corey Patterson hit the game winning HR. I remember thinking how great it was that our young talent was stepping up. Sigh.

Montanez and Wellemeyer brought back within a couple of days of each other. Get ready for the imminent return of Neifi and Macias.

If Welle wants to battle it out with Stevens, Berg, Shark, Diamond, and whoever for one of the final bullpen spots, whatever, but if he even sniffs a shot at a rotation spot, that will suck.

I guess Welles a guy who could pitch long innings out of the pen if a starter implodes early, but then again, so could some of our other non descript AAAA relievers.

How about Choi instead.

The funny thing is he probably has the leg up on three out of the four guys you just named without throwing a pitch.

Don't forget Enrique Wilson.

Don't forget Enrique Wilson.

And Damian Jackson.

I actually saw both of them play in the minors. They played for Kinston, North Carolina (the Indians' A+ team) and at the time I lived about 25 miles away, so I went to a few of their games each year.

I'm assuming (hoping) this is nothing more than organizational depth and he'll likely be at AAA in case of injury.

If I said that Wellemeyer would pitch more than 15 innings for the Cubs this year, would you take the other side of that bet? I wouldn't.

I'm going to miss the K-Tribe when they move after next year. They were a nice sports-related internship provider to our journalism/PR majors, too.

I read that they're trying to attract a new team to Kinston, but I haven't seen any details about who that might be. That comment may have been wishing more than something being imminent. It's too bad when something like the current Mudcats franchise moving causes a domino effect like that.

Oh yes. He was one of my favorite pitchers for the longest time after that, even if he did suck.

If they keep 7 bullpen guys he might have a shot as an end of the bullpen long reliever / spot starter with a good spring. Not great but probably not that worse than the Thomas Diamond's, etc that he would be competing with. I would rather he or someone similar get the job over the scenario of Cashner not getting the rotation spot and spending the season in this kind of role instead of being in the starting rotation at AAA.
