Yep, that's the plan. Sign Pujols and go with Reed Johnson in CF, Brad Snyder in RF, and Bobby Scales at 3B.

I wouldn't put it past them.

Pretty much the type of [expletive] they pulled throughout the bulk of the Sosa era.

Please don't be mad at us, Albert

I think he may have been.

it will be so much better when he's doing this for us.

Yesssssssss. That walkoff might as well have come with a note saying "do you like me? Check the box for yes!"

It's going to cost us an extra $5 million/year to convince him to come to such an awful team.

His stats will go way down because he won't be able to tee off on Cubs pitching anymore.

His OPS is 20-30 points lower against the Cubs than his career mark.

From MLBTR:

Rosenthal "can't see" Jim Hendry returning as the Cubs' general manager given the team's current state. "Forget about signing a free agent such as the Cardinals' Albert Pujols or the Brewers' Prince Fielder," Rosenthal writes. "The Cubs are so far gone, they are much more than one player away." Carlos Pena, John Grabow, Kosuke Fukudome, Kerry Wood and Jeff Baker are all trade candidates this summer; MLBTR's Tim Dierkes recently looked at the values of these players and others on the struggling Cubbies.

No.

"The Cubs are so far gone, they are much more than one player away."

... I can agree with that.

"Forget about signing a free agent such as the Cardinals' Albert Pujols or the Brewers' Prince Fielder,"

... but this does not logically follow. At all. In fact if you're more than one player away, then you'd better get real good ones.

If Rosenthal has a better solution to the Cubs' need for a first basemen I'd love to hear it. Personally I'm not a fan of relying on the Lyle Overbays of the world until something falls in our laps.

the cubs finished last with an atrocious roster built around broken-down starters in 2006, and made the playoffs the next year. apparently rosenthal and lots of other dolts can't remember events five years ago.

The 2006 Cubs had a lot more pieces in place. I don't see a hitter on the caliber of mid-2000s Lee or Ramirez on this team.

Then again, the 2011 offseason promises some better prizes than Soriano.

not that many players hit like that any more because most players aren't on steroids.

castro and soto are a good start and their rotation, when healthy, is reasonably solid. and obviously the main thing is the money coming off the books in the next couple of years. the bottom line is, it's not hard for a team with the cubs' resources to make a quick turnaround.

Bull [expletive]. The 2006 Cubs had different pieces, not more.

Exactly. The 2006 Cubs had a couple of studs but not much else. This year's team has some young talent, but is missing 1-2 impact players. With all the money coming off the books and players becoming available, that can be remedied quickly.
