Rotoworld's take:

Danny Knobler of CBSsports.com hears that the Cubs will try to sign Albert Pujols to a shorter contract with higher annual salaries.

It's not a bad strategy. Pujols reportedly has a nine-year offer worth around $200 million from the Cardinals, which would be the third-largest contract in baseball history, but the $22 million average annual value would tie with Adrian Gonzalez for 12th in baseball. In addition to the Cubs, St. Louis will have competition from the Marlins. According to ESPN.com, Miami is expected "to make an aggressive run at Pujols over the next two days."

Jimmy Rollins Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes [December 5 at 8:49am CST]

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has already met with Jimmy Rollins' agent Dan Lozano at the Winter Meetings, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. Olney says it appears now that the Phillies' greatest competition for the shortstop could be the Brewers and Cardinals. Rollins, 33, seeks a five-year contract.

Interesting. Surely the Cards and Brewers wouldn't be able to afford Rollins and their respective 2011 1st basemen. If they're both pursuing him that hard could it suggest that they're both considering moving on? We've all heard that the Brewers have no chance at resigning Fielder, but they keep popping up in his rumors.

Of course they're lining up contingencies. If they weren't, their GMs would be really bad at their jobs (remember the Astros/Beltran fiasco after the 2005 season?). In the case of the Brewers, it's not really so much a contingency as their new reality. They made Prince their best offer, but it's not enough to get it done and everyone knows it.

Bowden says Boras has meetings scheduled with teams rumored to be "in" on Fielder. Teams may be Nats, Mariners, Brewers, Blue Jays, and Cubs.

The thing is, most Brewer fans have long since accepted the fact that Fielders gone an are fine with it if means that their team can spread that money around. Such is the life of a small market team. Pump out top players and keep them as long as you can before they move on. Does anyone in Tampa really think that they'll have a rotation of Price/Hellickson/Shields 5 years from now?

@Ken_Rosenthal

#Cubs met today with Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano. No word on nature of talks. #MLB

Lozano: "Theo, Albert has no interest in leaving STL for you guys, but we want to help out by driving the price up and thus either getting STL to up their offer, or having another team over pay".

Theo: "Sounds good, Dan".

On to Prince.

Hotel Anatole would be room service. Absolutely the best hotel in Dallas.

It just occurred to me that all these leaks about the Cubs making non-serious (i.e. fewer years, fewer total value, higher AAV) offers to Pujols and Fielder is exactly the sort of thing Epstein would let leak out if he wanted to make a serious bid and still have other teams underestimate his interest.

So, what you’re saying is . . . he knows what we don’t know, and he knows that he knows what we don’t know, but we don’t know what he knows we know, and THAT’S what’s important . . . !

Olney says Brewers are indicating they're out on Prince. Personally, I'm starting to think he's staying there myself.

Uh, yea. Highly doubt that.

Theo just said on MLB Network that he was talking to Lozano about Rodrigo Lopez. False alarm, guys.

It really wouldn't be wise to do so. Unless they want to go back to the days of having Molitor and Yount surrounded by a bunch of garbage as early as 2013 that really isn't the wise move for them. I think that Toronto would be his best bet at this point. he could really put them in position to finally compete with the Yankees and Red Sox. Perhaps they'd like to add a front end starter for a package built around Rasmus and Drabek 8-)
