Per Adam Schefter, Harbaugh is "expected to agree to a five-year contract with the 49ers." That man is going to be rich.

And a lot of coaches looking for extensions are going to be expecting to get paid. Lovie Smith, for example.

As I mentioned in the college thread, coaches' salaries (including assistants) is the new arms race in college football rather than facilities. It'll be pretty interesting to see how that affects the NFL.

Schefter says the 49ers have called a press conference for this afternoon.

It's supposedly a 5 year, $25 million deal.

Harbaugh to the 49ers for 5 years according to Schefter.

You still have a week to come to your senses and realize what's going to happen to the 2011 Stanford football team, Andrew Luck.

I think he's banking on the 49ers sucking next year and then reuniting with Harbaugh.

I think the Niner's have a roster that should have made them legitimate playoff contenders this year. If they get a competent QB and Harbaugh proves to be competent coach they will be much improved next year.

I really don't understand why Luck's going to stay at Stanford now. San Francisco still won't be bad enough to get the first overall pick next year.

maybe he's just terrified of playing for Carolina, doesn't believe its a good fit for him.

Maybe Luck comes from a rich family, likes school, wants to graduate in a year and doesn't care if he plays for the 49ers (and knows it's not that likely they'd trade up for him). He's not the first top-3 pick QB to come back for another year (P. Manning and Bradford). And a Stanford degree is worth way more than a Tennessee or Oklahoma one.

Harbaugh leaving by itself doesn't make a huge impact on Luck's senior season. If there are changes at OC and/or QB coach, though, Luck may reconsider depending on how things shake out over the next few days.

I hope Fangio doesn't follow Harbaugh to the 49ers. I want him to be DC at UCLA. How long would it take Jim build a staff?

I'm thinking maybe he's as good as his word: he really does want to complete his degree, and worry about it later.

Add in the fluid nature of the NFL CBA for next year, and he's taking what he knows he'll have lined up versus the uncertainty of the NFL (both in terms of the labor, and just trying to make it).

I guess I don't blame him, if that's really the case.

When is the last time a college to pro coaching change worked out? The best I can come up with is Barry Switzer and that was with Jimmy Johnson's team. Here's the names I could recall off of the top of my head: Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Butch Davis, Bobby Petrino, then Switzer and Jimmy Johnson. Am I missing anyone?

Tom Coughlin and Steve Marrucci haven't done too badly. The jury is still out on what Carroll is doing in Seattle. Overall though, it hasn't been the greatest of ideas.

Harbaugh would seem to be ideally suited to beat that though between his playing experience, his NFL coaching experience, the fact that he hasn't been coaching in college so long that he's married to what works in college, and the fact that his brother already coaches an NFL team.

Nnambi Asomugha is now an unrestricted FA. His contract voided because he didn't eclipse some incentives that were considered damn near impossible for him to miss. He can't be franchised either, so whenever FA starts, one of, if not THE best CB in the league will be available.
