It's presumeably a backup plan if Harbaugh goes to Miami, but...

The 49ers have reportedly had “initial discussions” with Josh McDaniels, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News.

Why on Earth would anyone have interest in him as a head coach right now? He was an absolute trainwreck in almost every way.

In thinking about places Vince could go next, is there a chance he could go to the one organization that looks only at measureables when looking at players? I realize Al Davis has Campbell and Gradkowski already, but could Vince's measureables and big name sway him to bring VY to Oakland?

I could see them having interest in him as a coach, but not wanting to give him power over personnel as he had in Denver. And to be honest, if he had just been brought in has head coach at Denver, it's entirely possible he'd have had a lot more success.

I'm pretty sure the Titans are going to have to waive Young. He's got a 4 mill roster bonus coming up in March and he can't be dealt until after February 17th as it is. My guess is most teams in need of a QB will be looking towards the draft at that point and looking at Young as a fallback option if they don't get their guy then.

I'd be stunned if they were able to trade him. With the declaration that he's gone either way, a team isn't going to give up a pick to ensure the Titans part with him. The only positive to trading for him is the security to know you've got him while you work out contract details. I don't think that will be enough, though, for a QB who may not even be a starter.

I fully expect he'll be cut unless a team really thinks it can fix him.

These chairs are arranging themselves pretty quickly. I guess Cowher isn't coaching again next year? And if by some chance Fisher winds up out in Tennessee, he's sitting out 2011 as well?

Dolphins offered Jim Harbaugh an 8Mil/year contract. Word is, he's going to accept it....because apparently, he's not a dumb ass.

And Sparano is still technically HC, right?

Yeah, pretty much.

And McDaniels isn't even interested, according to PFT.

It all depends on what the market is. I mean if you're talking about a 1 year $3M flyer, I'd love the Vikings to take a shot at it and see if he can wake up and stop being a dumbass. I highly doubt that will ever happen but it's worth a shot at that price.

With that post I wasn't really talking about standard procedures. VY strikes me as a player Al Davis would love and is a guy I could see him going after even if it doesn't make sense to.

As for where VY actually ends up, I think it does depend on his cost and what he's willing to do. If he insists on being a starter, his options are very limited and he takes the chance that nobody signs him until close to the start of the season. If he's willing to work as a backup and rebuild his value that way, he probably gets a job pretty quickly on a 1-year deal.

Christ,

$8m/yr for a guy with no NFL coaching experience?

Edit: Head coaching experience I guess he did a couple years as the Raiders QB coach

He's worth whatever someone will pay for him.

I'll just say I wouldn't do it for that much money.

If he makes it work then the Dolphins are geniuses I guess.

Didn't they already try this recently and have it blow up in their faces?

If the NFL institutes a stricter pay scale for rookie contracts, he's going to lose millions.

Or, if he gets hurt...

Well there's likely a lockout before the draft anyway, so even if came out, the rookie pay scale could still hurt him, right?

Where the rookie pay scale could affect these guys is it means to make the big bucks, players need to get to FA as quickly as possible as the money will be in the second contract. By staying in school, he loses a year on that track.

Gotcha...that makes sense.

The lockout would start immediately after the draft, so the players would be selected but contracts wouldn't be negotiated until after the lockout ended is my understanding.

If I'm right, then the rookie contracts would be subject to the new CBA.

Maybe he doesn't want to risk the NFL lockout and missing the season.

If there are no negotiations until after the lockout is resolved and there is no 2011 season, then his contract wouldn't go into effect until the 2012 season, which would negate the money lost thing that vance was talking about in terms of getting to the second contract. By staying, Luck guarantees he gets to play in the 2011 season, even if it's in college.

The lockout date I've heard is March 1. The draft is mid/late April, and thus, would likely be delayed until post-lockout, I'm presuming.
