Reports are Dallas could have taken the same offer Jacksonville gave Washington, but instead decided to stand pat and take Smith. They wanted Smith and didn't want to risk him not being there later.

I think I would have taken the trade down, but I'm ok with the pick.

I actually do think the Ravens have a beef. It sounds like the trade was agreed on and Angelo didn't hold up his end of the bargain. But the rules are, it didn't get done in time so the pick was not traded. The Ravens looked bad for "skipping" their pick, but Angelo comes off as a slimeball in this whole thing. Ultimately, the Ravens won't get anything out of this.

Slimeball?

Incompentent maybe, but it doesn't seem like he was trying to work anyone over.

Will this affect other teams being willing to do draft day deals with the Bears in the future?

Well if you're the team trading down, you would definitely have worries. If you're trading up though, I think it would matter less.

On the other hand if you're a GM whos traded successfully with the Bears in the past, are you going to let this event hold more weight than you're past dealings? So it may have its biggest effect on a team without a rapport with Angelo and the Bears.

The problem is, how do we know that. I think it is quite possible that the Bears got wind of who KC was going to take and tanked the deal. Who besides Angelo can refute that. But either way incompetent or a slime ball, doesn't bode well for Angelo trading in the future during the draft.

Well Sherrod and Bulaga. Protect the franchise.

Yep.

I'm pretty shocked that Clifton didn't retire after we won the Super Bowl, which would've made the offensive line a huge priority. We experimented with Bulaga at LG last year before he settled in as the RT, so I wonder if Colledge is going to be on his way out after the selection of Sherrod.

Not the sexiest selection in the world, but definitely a good one. I would've loved to get Carimi, but I was surprised that he lasted as long as he did.

Packers get the Bears scraps....hehe.

Good pick though.

We'll see about that. ;)

I think the Packers and Bears are going to be good for a long time. This rivalry is about to get super intense, moreso than usual.

meh - we'll both be looking up at the Lions with their defensive line and most especially the Vikings with Ponder.

I am all for making fun of the Vikings and Ponder. However, the Lions I think are a legit concern moving forward.

Rumblings I have heard on the Texas boards is that Vince Young is going to try to sign with the Vikings when the lockout is over. I would pay to watch him and Peterson in the backfield together.

I don't know if I wanna scroll back through all the posts, but my thoughts on Titans and Vikings picks:

Titans: Not thrilled, considering Fairley, Gabbert and Prince were available. But it could have been worse. I think he'll turn out fine with Palmer working with him.

Vikings: I was pissed. Not a fan of Ponder at all. Maybe it'll turn out OK if he stays healthy. But that he gets compared to Chad Pennington doesn't give me much hope.

i still can't believe the other-worldly haul the Browns got for the 6th pick

they'll have a hard time not having the best draft of any team for the next year and this one

FWIW - The draft guy at RealGM had this to say:

Q:Can you give any thoughts on the Ravens - Bears trade gaff. Obviously the Bears are at fault. One of the local columnists here thinks the Bears should give up the 4th pick to the Ravens to protect their reputation when dealing with other teams in the future.

How does this mess up affect the Bears when dealing with other teams?

A:I wouldn't give up the pick. Jerry Angelo is very well-respected around the league as a guy with integrity, and both teams got their men regardless. I do think the Bears need to figure out who specifically in their room dropped the ball, and that person should be fired. Teams have guys assigned to certain phones and one of those only goes to/from the NFL office. It's almost never the GM himself but usually a Dir. of Player Personnel or a Scouting Coordinator that mans that phone. Inexcusable that whomever it was failed there.

IMO teams will have short memories and if they want something the Bears have to offer, it won't bother them. Now if Angelo initiates the call and it's to a guy he doesn't have a strong relationship with, I can see it being a minor issue.

Is there any indication that the Bears were looking to trade up to get anyone beside Carimi?

Nope. From the sounds of it, it was definitely to go after Carimi.

If you want to feel better about Ponder, go check out anything Wes Bunting has written about him at the National Football Post. Ponder is Bunting's favorite QB in this draft and while I'm not sure he'd support taking him at 12, he feels more strongly about Ponder's eventual success than any other QB in this draft.

On Locker, I don't hate that we drafted him. I hate that we drafted him when there was a superior player in almost every way at the same position (Gabbert). Had Gabbert not been on the board I'd have been fine with the pick (though not particularly excited). Passing on Gabbert just to give him to the Jags seems very strange.

Yeah that's encouraging. I like Bunting a lot and he's had him as the top QB in the draft. I saw Pete Prisco thinks he'll be the best QB in the draft also. Then you've got guys like Dilfer who said he didn't have him in the top 3 rounds but thinks Dalton is the best QB in the draft. It's a total crapshoot.

Like I said, I like his floor. He has the leadership, smarts, toughness and accuracy plus good mobility/athleticism. This play shows that his arm strength looked pretty damn good as a junior: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-Jar435rnc

I DVR'd the draft last night and started watching around 10:30. This is totally the way to watch this thing. I got through the first 25 picks in about 10 minutes.

Have to say that I hated the NFL Network coverage, if only because there were almost no surprises when the picks were announced. With all the cell phones and cameras on the player tables, you knew who was being picked about 3 minutes before the pick was announced. Maybe that's just the nature of the draft now, but it takes all the suspense out of it

He was injured as a senior and that hurt his production and arm strength and that injury-plagued season, I think, is the reason people laugh at the pick so much. Most see him as he was as a senior and not as he was as a junior.

That said, I still think the Titans, Vikings and Seahawks made the worst 1st round picks. All three were reaches with better players on the board.

I didn't watch ESPN's coverage this year, but that's the way they've always done it as well. There hasn't been suspense about a pick in the first round for years now.

I prefer watching NFL Network coverage because of Mike Mayock. Deion's largely about the same as everybody ESPN has, but Mayock gives some great analysis.

Wait, what was the point of watching, just to see the picks announced for suspense sake? Did you manage to not read anything until watching?

Because if you just wanted to see the picks you could have done it in 5 minutes on the internet. Isn't the point of actually watching the Draft because you want to see the commentary, or that you want to see it live?

I like seeing the pick announced and then the couple of minutes of analysis. I fast-forwarded through the next 8 minutes of speculation nonsense until the next pick

Well David Haugh thinks the Bears should forfeit the pick to the Ravens to protect their reputation in dealing with other teams:

Haugh is an idiot and a terrible writer. he uses more stupid analogies and metaphors then any other person alive, often several for the same lame point.
