With the Yankees losing out on Cliff Lee, the pressure will be growing for them to acquire another pitcher. A perfect storm for the Cubs. Trade Zambrano to the Yankees for prospects. Z is reunited with Girardi, Rothschild and maybe Prior. We get addition by subtraction, as we lose that bloated salary.

The fact that they have Girardi and Rothschild might be the reason they don't want Zambrano. :yahoo:

The New York Daily News had a story about it being likely that the Yankees would now turn their focus on Big Z. While I would like to see someone take his salary, the hit to the rotation would be huge. As it stands, Dempster and Z are the only starters that could potentially be the shut down guy.

I guess I would have to see the prospects mentioned for such a deal, and whether or not it includes a starter coming back with a high ceiling.

No trade clause.

You think Z would have a major problem with going to New York and pitching for the Yankees with Rothschild?

I seem to remember reading either Sullivan or Rogers this past week and Z was intent on pitching for Mike Quade, and not lifting his no-trade clause.

I don't think Z and Piniella were ever on the same page.

I have a feeling his desire to pitch for Mike Quade might temper a bit with the prospect of pitching for the New York Yankees...

Here's the article:

I think they would hesitate. The Yankees world feels burned by Carl Pavano and to a certain extent Javier Vasquez twice. They dont' trust NL pitchers, with the expection of guys like Sabathia who established his success in the AL.

Here's the excerpt on Z from that article, btw.

In the meantime, look for Cashman to spend his saved money on shoring up the bullpen, with re-signing Kerry Wood a new priority. And in addition to re-signing Pettitte, he'll still be exploring the trade market with the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano, who experienced a turnaround both in temperament and results under the tutelage of new Yankee pitching coach Larry Rothschild the last six weeks of last season, a likely target.

What a ridiculous comment on Zambrano. He experienced a turnaround under the tutelage of the same guy that has been in charge of his tutelage his entire career?

This was my exact thought.

Here's a thought...Trade Z to the Yankees for prospects who we then could spin in a trade with the Rays for Matt Garza. We save some money and headaches, while also filling in the void with a more dependable starter. Heck, we should still have room for Brandon Webb as well. Get it done Jimbo!

Trading Z right now would be interesting. I'm not even sure I'd know what to think. Would this signal a rebuild of some sorts? Would it mean Ricketts is quickly moving payroll back down to previous levels? Would we go after Greinke or Garza?

I know Z is overpaid. And there's some inherent risk factor with him too. Do we want to trade him right now? How much money would the Yanks be willing to take on? Would we get ANY sort of usable return? Prospects or major leaguers?

I think that this is probably just the NY newspapers stirring things up and I don't expect Z to even be seriously talked about by Hendry. But, it'd be interesting anyway, especially with as boring as our offseason has been.

Why is Garza more dependable than Z again?

My guess is, that if they moved Z they would be able to target Greinke. As far as Garza goes, he would definitely be cheaper initially than Z.

If Z can't handle media pressure in Chicago, the Yanks have to know that he'd fold in the intense scrutiny of the New York press. You don't want a headcase going to a pressure cooker like New York.

Z can't handle media pressure in Chicago? He's spent his entire career there and he's had a really nice career.
