Yay?

http://www.bleachernation.com/2010/12/03/lukewarm-stove-source-says-chris-davis-could-be-coming-to-cubs-soon/

A Major League source indicates that the Cubs are very close to pulling the trigger on a Chris Davis trade. The Ranger first baseman is blocked by Mitch Moreland, and would be an inexpensive option with a high upside for the Cubs. In turn, the Rangers are looking for one of Welington Castillo or Robinson Chirinos. The Cubs would probably have to kick in a little something more.

That .300 career OBP (872 PA) and -1.7 career WAR will look awesome in Cubs blue. He had a really big postseason too. Oh wait nevermind he didn't make the postseason roster and spent a majority of the year in the minors.

Who would we rather see sent out? Castillo or Chirinos?

If we don't have money to throw around we're gonna have to hit on moves like this.

This pretty much seems like just a reiteration of the rumor that was published a few weeks ago

Maybe...the blog post says something about how this is more recent info than Levine's rumor last month. He also points out that with Hill being tendered, the Cubs have 4 catches on the 40 man roster, making a trade of one seem likely.

I really hope this deal happens. I think it is a smart move for the Cubs. Now get Brandon Webb already!!!

Why? Sell me on it...because based on the numbers he doesn't look like a particularly good player. Decent power but no patience, he's been a negative with the glove in all 3 seasons he's been on the Rangers, and negative offensive numers 2 of the 3 years. He spent most of the year in the minors this year and didn't make the postseason roster for them this year. And now he's gonna the starting 1B for the Cubs?

Hes basically someone elses Jake Fox/Micah Hoffpauir. This being said, it doesnt look as though the Cubs will be contending in '11 anyway, so I rather at lest see what the 24 year old can do instead of Lyle Overbay or Russell Branyan, and if all it costs us is a blocked backup catcher, why the hell not. However, I really dont see why we have to give up anything in addition to Castillo or Chirinos unlkess they want one of our expendable AAAA relievers.

The upside is Davis has strong minor league performance, has some MLB success, is still only 25 this May, and is supposedly mobile/athletic to make a solid 1B defensively. Also, he'd come at a pittance compared to other options. He's not as good a buy low option as some others like Ka'aihue, but personally I like him better than say, Pena.

First, I'm not sure he will be the starting 1B. Secondly, what's not to like about trading for a player with some potential at a position of need for a player who's ceiling is 2nd-string catcher.

Davis and Pena aren't exactly exclusive. No matter what we end up doing, I wouldn't mind grabbing Davis just to stash in Iowa.

If he was acquired I think it would be near certainty he would start. Nothing wrong with trading a catching prospect for him. But if he's a starter that sucks.

Getting Davis seems very similar to when we signed Barrett. Maybe they know something we don't know and Davis will be a solid player like Barrett kind of was out of nowhere.

Than again I think the odds are against that.

Do you prefer Davis over Pena because of age and cost? Just curious.

Neither Davis or Pena puts us over the top. I like Davis because he's young enough that if he exceeds expectations then he could potentially be a longer term fix in a system that has zero 1B prospects. He's also cheap and not a big enough name that there would be any hesitation or inflexibility in replacing him if he fails, which isn't necesarily the case with Pena.

Although his MLB numbers to date are underwhelming, this is a rather impressive list of age based similarity scores:

1. Carlos Delgado (980)

2. Justin Morneau (971)

3. Dick Gernert (962)

4. Jose Cruz (961)

5. Willie Stargell (954)

6. Brian Hunter (953)

7. Frank Thomas (952)

8. Pat Burrell (952)

9. Albert Belle (948)

10. Melvin Nieves (946)

True, but if we can get him on a one year deal, Pena could make himself a pretty valuable trade chip near the deadline.

I vote for Pena and Davis.

At this point, barring an unforeseen trade, that is likely the best the Cubs can do.

Getting a better 1B prospect would be ideal depending on the cost. I'm not sure I want Prince Fielder manning 1B on a big contract for several years, so getting someone young and good would be nice. Pena is a one year fix and Davis seems like a bit of a long shot to be the long term answer. The Cubs may have the answer in house with Josh Vitters, but he has a lot of questions left to answer. With Gonzalez in Boston and Lars Anderson not included in the deal to San Diego, could he be pried away from the Red Sox?

So we'd be trading a backup catcher who might not even make the major league roster because he's blocked by the great Koyie Hill and getting Willie Stargell or Frank Thomas. Sign me up. :D

Good. Again, Chris Davis can play 3B and corner OF along with 1B. If he's a utility/bench player this is a great move. If he's the starting 1B, he better channel his minor league numbers.

It occurs to me that the only reports I've seen linking the Cubs to Davis are one beat writer speculating we might have interest and one blog rumor.

Is there anything more concrete out there?

Well, it is only Chris Davis, I don't expect someone like Rosenthal to have his ears to the ground about every Chris Davis rumbling.

Sure would be nice if the potential starting 1B for the Cubs was worthy of a post on Rotoworld.com. :(
