Marmol, Soto, Gorzelanny, Marshall, Baker, and Hill all expected to be offered arb. Per Bruce Miles.

In a year where money is clearly an issue with us, why in all of blue hell are we offering arb to Hill and even Baker, for that matter....... :banghead:

Baker can pound lefties. It's not crazy to keep him around on a team with such limited offense. But Hill is stupid.

Yeah, I kind of think the same way on Baker. I'm not pissed we're keeping him, because he does serve a purpose anyway. Just with the supposed money situation, I was thinking he'd likely be gone. But, he'll likely not get much more than 1.2 or so.

Offering arb to Koyie Hill though is mind-numbingly stupid.

I dont have the Koyie Hill hate that a lot of people do, he is what he is, a light hitting backup catcher. However, when we have 3 guys in the minors in Castillo, Chirinos, and Clevenger that not only could do a better job for next to nothing but could possibly generate some trade interest, this is just a pointless move. Hes like the new Chad Fox. If you like the guy so much, offer him a minor league coaching job.

Im OK with Jeff Baker. Hes an OK utility player and hes not really holding anyone back. Id much prefer him over giving a multi year deal to another Aaron Miles type.

Henry Blanco was a light hitting backup catcher. Koyie Hill is a complete non-entity at the plate and a negative to the team. He's got a career OPS+ of 49 and has over 500 PA the past two seasons. That's bad.

And will end up in almost a platoon with Geo. Awesome.

Only if Quade has the same knee jerk doghouse that Lou did.

Guys, maybe he won't accept.

Actually I'm surprised that the article didn't say "Cubs offer arbitration to Marmol, Soto, Gorzelanny, Marshall, Baker, and Hill. Hill immediately accepted and started dancing around the room."

It's not that type of arbitration. It's pre-FA arbitration.

So does that mean that if the Cubs offer it there's no accepting it, and if they don't offer it then he becomes a FA?

There's no accepting/declining to be done by Hill. You either offer arbitration to your arb-eligible players or you release them. If the Cubs can't work out a deal before the arbitration hearing (they always do), then they'll go to arbitration and the arbiter will pick either the Cubs submitted # or Hill's.

Why in the world would Hendry offer Hill arbitration? Is anybody in their right mind worried that Hill would go elsewhere?

It has been widely reported that Hendry is on a very tight budget, for him to throw away money on Hill is just stupidity.

Someone refresh my memory, please. Has anything positive happened thus far this offseason?

The Dodgers signed Jon Garland

The Cardinals picked up Theriot.

How shortsighted of me. Upon further reflection, I think we can count as positives that Geovany Soto is still alive and Jim Hendry has announced no plans to steal Christmas.

Good news for you maybe, but think about how CC feels.

Ryan Theriot says hi.
