Wasn't he under contract? Does that mean the Cubs gave the Yankees permission to talk to him?

As much as the Cubs come off looking like good guys in this deal, they should have requested a prospect in return for letting him out of his contract. Maybe Cashman now owes Hendry one.

What about Mike Maddux? Or Hersheiser?

Maybe Mike Maddux would want to work with his brother. Obviously he's currently employed by the Rangers who probably regard him highly after last season.

With all the budgetary discussion, I'm guessing the new pitching coach would be someone coaching in the minors for the Cubs. I can't see them spending top dollar for a coach when they went cheap for the manager and are pleading poverty to fill the holes on the team.

Looks like it.

According to a major league source, the Cubs will stay within their organization to replace Rothschild for the Cubs' pitching coach position. Top candidates will include minor-league pitching coordinator Mark Riggins, Cubs bullpen coach Lester Strode, Triple-A pitching coach Mark Mason and Double-A pitching coach Dennis Lewallyn.

Although there is no clear favorite at this time, Riggins is highly thought of throughout baseball and may have a slight edge with his 26 years of coaching experience. Rothschild's time in Chicago was spent working for five managers, including Don Baylor, Bruce Kim, Dusty Baker, Lou Piniella and the team's present manager, Mike Quade.

But the insistence for the Cubs to go to the discount bin for everything just sucks.

I think that's an unfounded conclusion. Is there a pitching coach out there whom A. you feel is available at the moment and B. you would actually spend millions on, or whatever amount would qualify the signing as not being in "the discount bin" to you?

I would think, or at least hope, that they're looking to hire from within because there's little gain to be had in holding a massive search/hiring process for the position of pitching coach.

I don't know anything about pitching coaching availability. And I actually don't mind this choice as a pitching coach. I do like the idea of Maddux, but I have no insight into that and whether he would be any good or even willing. Its just the summation of the offseason rhetoric about not being able to afford anybody. SSR has said it best.

Despite being uninformed about these pitching coaches though, I do not think it would take a massive search to obtain one. The Yankees just decided to pick a good one and pay him more money. Must be nice.

boy it's a good thing that all the best options to replace our management vacancies already happen to be working for the cubs in lesser roles.

this is just a feeler question, not any kind of criticism. What is the evidence that Greg Maddux would be a good pitching coach?

I remember a number of players have said they've learned quite a bit just talking to Maddux about pitching. I have no idea where to start looking for quotes from any of them, however, so take it as you will.

This is surprising considering it was reported earlier in the off season that Rothschild had committed to coming back. :banghead:

This team is falling to pieces. Anybody know what happened to Alan Dunn? Is he still with the organization?

I think Mark Riggins would be a very interesting choice and one that I would support (particularly with the chances being high that we'll be using young arms in the near future). He has a good track record of fixing mechanics. That said, I'll be somewhat disappointed that he's not working with the prospects. He's done a good job with the arms that were sent to work with him.

can leo mazzone be lured out of retirement?

If cost is an issue – and if we're looking in-house only then it is – I really doubt we'd have enough to lure Mazzone out. He'd be a great hire, though.

He was hired away by the Orioles as bullpen coach during the 2007 season and still serves in that role.

It isn't just former Cub players that MacPhail collects. :D

I guess there isn't any real hard evidence. A HOF pitcher without size or extraordinary stuff (except control) and being noted as a smart student of pitching while willing to share insights with others seems to suggest he would be a good pitching coach.
