thought that came to mind thinking about this game: the messy homefield conditions are really a nice equalizer for us, more slipping for their receivers and completely equalizing their speed at wide receiver and quarterback

start tearing the field up more please

Is U2 still on tour? Aerosmith would do 8-)

Time to call in the star power.

Not a great day for the Bears today.

Falcons won to stay a game ahead for best record in the NFC

Packers won to tie the Bears in the NFC North

Bucs won to keep pace with Bears in potential WC race

Saints won to keep pace as well.

At least either the Giants or Eagles are going to lose, meaning that there will be a 3 way tie between the Saints, Bucs, Packers/Bears for the 2 Wild Card spots.

Also it slightly is good that Seattle lost, meaning that if we are fortunate enough to win the division, we have 2 games on Seattle for the 3rd seed.

The NFC 5th and 6th seed is going to be an interesting battle. Could be a matter of going to Chicago, Green Bay, New York, or Philly in the first round vs. going to Seattle or St Louis. Not to mention facing probably an 11-win team vs. a likely 8 win team.

That's a good point. As much as I'd love a home game, I might rather go to St. Louis to play the Rams, then play New Orleans or Philly at Soldier Field.

I'm still not buying the Bucs. And the good news is that their next three games are: @BAL, vs ATL, @WAS. I think there's a decent chance they lose two of those three, so if the Bears can win two of their next three they should be ahead of them for a WC.

And the Bucs, Saints, and Falcons all play each other once more, so we'll get some inevitable losses from some of those teams eventually. But we need to pull hard for the Cowboys over the Saints on Thanksgiving. If they play like they did the last two games, I think they can give the Saints a run.

If the Eagles destroy the Giants tonight and we manage to beat the Eagles next week, I wonder how much the perception of the Bears will improve, both nationally and locally.

Might? That is a no brainer.

The fun thing is that if we finished with a 6 seed we could be looking at a WC game against GB. Even though thats a much harder game I'd love to play the packers in the playoffs. It would be nice to propel packers-bears over pakersvikings as the chief rivalry in the north

I'd much rather that happened in the NFC championship game.

Would be kind of nice if the Eagles had a let down in this one.

Or that the Bears really have improved that much and win anyway with the extra rest.

I think the game is currently off the boards in Vegas, but I did see there was an early line of Eagles -3, which is what I was guessing. But I think it could sway stronger toward Philly in the next coupld days. A 10 point win over NYG without playing all that well is going to impress people, and most still doubt the Bears big time. I think this is a game Philly could win fairly easily, but I also think the Bears have a legit shot, if the defense holds up against that all around attack. I think this is the first time all year they have faced a top RB who also had a very dangerous QB on his team. The Bears defense handled the Giants offense, and while the Giants are a quality running team, Manning is not that much of a challenge to defend. They can't afford to overload against the run and dare Vick to beat them, because he can. I will guess we will see a bunch of blitzes though, forcing Vick to make quick decisions instead of having time to scramble and run or throw deep.

Huge game here. A win and they are in the driver's seat for at least the 5 seed. Lose, and they not only give GB a leg up for the division, but they will likely be trailing 2 or more wild card opponents.

Peter King randomly vaulted the Packers to number 1 in his "Fine Fifteen" on the basis of how they've played over the last month.

The games they played? 4 point win over the 3-7 Vikings, a 9-0 win over the 8-2 Jets, a 38 point win over the 3-7 "We're trying to get our coach fired" Cowboys, and a 28 point win over the 3-7 "We are too" Vikings.

I'm not necessarily arguing they shouldn't be ahead of the Bears or anythng (Bears are 9th). But nothing in that schedule from the last month screams "We should be ahead of 3 different teams that have a better record than us, including 2 in the tougher conference".

They beat the Jets in NY, which is good enough to be vaulted over one of those teams in the tougher conference with a better record. Additionally, the Jets have lucked out wins in three straight games now. Plus New England has not be that impressive to me, so why not? Really good teams win by large margins. Green Bay has won by 20+ on three occasions, and have outscored their opponents by 100+, the most in football. I see no problem whatsoever calling them the best in football. The storyline of the AFC being better than the NFC by a wide margin this season is just way overblown. Each conference has a very weak division out west, an overrated division out east and a strong mix of solid teams that can all beat each other on any given Sunday.

Peter King just ensured a loss for the Pack against Atlanta this week.

I'm sure we will but why do people read Peter King in the first place?

He does produce a nice, lengthy summary of the weekend's action on Monday Morning, and it's on a very visible website.

I don't have any context for King's guarantee of a Packers' loss (I actually don't read him :)), but obviously the Packers could beat any team right now, so guaranteeing that they lose is pretty silly.

How has NE not been impressive?

They are 8-2 this year and have beaten Miami, Baltimore, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis this year. GB does have the best point differential in the league, but I guess I just don't credit them to destroying a teams that have given up. Kudos to them for playing well and not taking their foot off the pedal but the last 2 weeks they've destroyed 2 teams with a combined record of 6-14 by 66 points.

Don't get me wrong it certainly is impressive to beat an NFL team by that margin, but based on the teams played it isn't enought propell them over a team like NE at this point. Or Atlanta.

Posted

I don't know, Atlanta is being annointed top team now?

I understand they're a talented football team with a good shot at the Super Bowl, but I'm still waiting to see if they can follow through on all this.

I feel more comfortable saying NE is the best team than anyone. I realize they've been fighting through some things this year, but the pedigree of success is still intact and they've been posting wins that seem pretty solid to me.

They got their asses handed to them by Cleveland. They've got the same point differential as the Bears. They struggled at home to the Vikings in ideal "beat the Vikings" conditions. I've seen them get beat bad by the Jets and also struggled against Buffalo. Two 14+ point losses this season. They are a quality team, but I don't see them as being better than everybody else. I think Green Bay is easily better and that passing game would light New England up.

My feelings are that the top 5 teams in the NFC are pretty even at this point between Philly, NY, Green Bay, Atlanta and New Orleans. Tampa and the Bears are still a clear step behind right now. The NFC West might just be four of the five or six worst teams in the NFC overall this year.

Damn I didn't know McCoy was that good until I looked at his stats.

This game is going to won or lost by our offense. The defense is going to give up it's share of points this week so it will be up to Cutler & company to answer. The positive from last night's game is that the Giants had 5 turnovers compared to the Eagles 2 and were still in the game up until the end.

Needless to say we can't turn the ball over much if at all.

I think it's on the defense because I don't see the offense winning a shootout. They've scored 27 only twice. Philly has done so 6 times. Philly's defense has given up some points in shootouts, but they are a top ten defense for yardage, tough against the pass and run. I can't see this Bears offense scoring 28 points against them.

Posted

If it comes down to the offense needing to score big points against the Eagles, we'll lose.

To me it's all about stiffening up near the goal line and forcing FGs rather than TDs. We can give up yards, but not TDs. We probably will give up yards.

That and, of course, turnovers.
