I wasn't going to the games because of the crappy promotions they were having. I feel much better now.

the soccer player Zambrano bobble head wasn't worth the price of admission for you?

Looks like the Cubs have made another scapegoat for another disappointing season.

2003: Bartman, the original scapegoat

2004: Sammy Sosa

2005: LaTroy Hawkins

2006: Dusty Baker

2007: Ted Lilly's glove

2008: damn priest with his holy water

2009: Milton Bradley

2010: Director of Sales and Promotions, Matt Wszolek

Cubs fired Matt Wszolek because of "sagging attendance."

And Jim Hendry still has a job.

The Cubs never even implied that it was because of attendance. And he was not the only one from that department to lose his job. The Ricketts apparently wanted their own guy last year which cost this guy his authority and then they decided they didn't need him at all after this year (along with the 3 others who were fired). The fact that they hired a new person as soon as they came on board makes me think that it truly is just restructuring the department to what the Ricketts want and not anything these people did.

Auditions for kid-friendly "Mr. Cubbie Bear" mascot, who will roam stands to pose with kids and provide hilarious on-field antics between innings next year... begin October 6! Better than Ronnie Woo Woo I suppose.

I can think of other departments in the organization that need restructuring far more than sales and marketing.

Next year's scapegoat: The head usher.

Or maybe it will be Roast. :D

Matt Wszolek, a 10-year Cubs employee......Wszolek's role in the department was reduced last fall when the Ricketts family took control of the club and named Wally Hayward as executive vice-president, chief sales and marketing officer.

Looks like Ricketts just wants his own guy in there. Nothing wrong with that.

so he wants his own guy in the sales and marketing department but he's cool with keeping on the general manager who's running the team into the ground? awesome.

I think it is safe to say that from his previous business experience he knows a lot more about sales and marketing than he does about baseball operations. Therefore it is perfectly logical that he could instantly identify that an upgrade needed to be made in that department but would not feel as comfortable doing something on the baseball side until he has a more in depth review and understands better what is being done well and where there could be improvements.

There is no way privately he is looking at the record of this team and the empty seats and not putting pressure on Hendry and his baseball operations team to turn it around in the short term or lose their jobs. So I think Hendry is on the hot seat for 2011.

So essentially it's perfectly logical that he will suck at getting this team back on its feet on the field.

Awesome.

Man the average person has really poor reading comprehension. It's kind of scary.

My apologies for attempting to interject some humor into the story.

When you provide a link, put "sagging attendance in quotes, and follow it with a knock on Hendry keeping his job, you would have had to read the article to know you were joking.

You are just upset because you didn't get a "Jim Hendry" bobble-head.

A Hendry "bobble-head" would probably be the most realistic looking one ever.
