I will say that I'm a little surprised they made that call on the field prior to a review. I turned away in disgust before it even happened, but had I seen the whole thing live, I wouldn't have thought a ref would make that call given the situation and just how late it was that he lost the ball.

I was surprised too especially since the official on camera instantly called it a touchdown before they changed it. The call on the field is what won them the game. If its called a TD on the field, I could easily see them interpret the play differently and keep it a TD.

I saw a lot of good things from the Bears today. I don't think I'm ready to go crazy with optimism yet, but I'm pretty pleased with the overall performance. I thought Cutler played a very good game other than the one boneheaded decision on the interception.

The defense was outstanding until they went into prevent. Urlacher was flying across the field, Peppers didn't get consistent pressure, but obviously made a few key impact plays. Even the secondary looked okay out there.

The turnovers need to get addressed. And we'll get a much better feel for how good this team really is over the next few weeks as we play better teams. But if we can continue to move the ball and stop the other team, we'll do much better than I thought.

The defense was very weak except for one play vs stafford and when Detroit shut down for hill.

Studs:

-Cutler. Looked very good other than the early pick. It was against a bad defense, but still. Nice mobility as well.

-Forte. A force receiving out of the backfield like he was in his rookie year. Was alright on running plays. Fumbles were a problem but he made up for it.

-LBs. Urlacher and Briggs were impressive as usual.

-Bowman/Peppers. Bowman kept CJ quiet until the end. Peppers had a critical sack although that was it.

Goats:

-Lovie. Way too conservative on the couple 4th and shorts we had.

-O-Line. Looked decent early, but then the protection fell off. Also, you HAVE to open up a hole on 1st and Goal from the 1-foot line.

-Knox/Hester. A couple blown routes from Knox which we saw a lot from him last year. Hester meanwhile was nothing special in the return game and was almost non-existant in the passing game.

-Olsen. Didn't get many chances but the ones he did get weren't great. Can't fumble inside the 10 like that.

lol, it wasn't that weak. They had 100 yards of total offense until Peppers bashed Stafford. And then they did shut down Hill for whatever that's worth. He's started before! They didn't really run it much either.

The only positive thing to come out of that ending is that it should get a horrible rule changed. You can hold the ball over 1 inch of the end zone chalk and immediately lose it, but it's still a touchdown. Yet if you catch a ball, get both feet down, get touched, roll, get your butt completely down, all while having full possession it's not a touchdown if it comes out before you finish one of the many moves.

I can't wait to hear the term "process" applied to a [expletive] football catch 500 times this week.

the good thing that came out of this is that the bears have a win and the vikings don't.

I'm listening to the Lions postgame. I guess I'd be talking about the same crap, but in the 25 minutes I've listened they havent mentioned anything about the game other than the call. People are calling in saying that things like "the refs are being paid off by the mob" and "I'm never watching the NFL again", etc.

They won't even admit that the call is correct by the rulebook. And they havent mentioned anything about the fact that if the Bears don't randomly fumble at the 8 yard line, or if Lovie doesn't take guaranteed points at the 1 yard line, etc.

who had coverage on johnson on the play in question, because he was covered well and johnson just made a great play.

Pretty sure Bowman was on him all game.

Cutler - somewhat disagree. A decent performance but the INT is completely unacceptable, and there were a couple more throws that were wildly inaccurate. Those things shouldnt happen when you are settled in the pocket for someone who supposedly has a million dollar arm. He also lost a fumble in the game. Still considering how bad the O-line was most of the game, it was a decent performance. I'd give him a B.

I think Bowman at first and then they put Tilman on him.

Are the 4:30 Fox games already set for next week? It seems that this would would be a good one for the ratings.

It's gonna be a 1 EST start according to the Bears website.

Does Dallas usually play home games at 1 EST? Seems like they're one of the more popular late game starts.

yeah, they were weak except that they didn't give up many yards.

why do you hate cutler so much? peterson makes a great play on that pass to knox or it's right in knox's lap.

just enjoy a great game from cutler and accept that he is our qb.

Receivers do that all the time. He caught the ball, got both feet/knees down, and flipped the ball up. The play ended when he got the 2nd knee down.

you don't know the rules. He didn't flip the ball up. It sucks but that is the rule.

Better explanation than I could give:

Calvin Johnson has the ball in two hands, then firmly in one. He gets both feet down and turns his body. His knee hits the ground with the ball solidly in his one-handed grasp, well off the ground. He is down. Touchdown.

That the ball contacts the ground in Johnson's process of putting his hand down and getting back up (a fluid motion in itself) and then is left on the ground shouldn't be the determining factor. Two hands, two feet, one firm hand still on ball, knee down, score.

The official with the best view of the play calls it a TD. Somebody comes along (apparently) and overrules him once, then refs back themselves up by "confirming" the already-overturned call with replay.

except that his natural motion led the ball to the ground. he did not stop, lay there for a second, and then put his hand down. his hand came down as a product of his momentum.

The 4PM national game for Fox is either Seattle/Denver or St. Louis/Oakland. Those are both terrible games for a national audience.

CBS has the doubleheader next week. The 4 PM games on the channel that doesn't have the doubleheader are almost always terrible because they're only seen by maybe 5% of the country at most. That's why those particular games were picked.

Lol. UMFan's odd hate for Cutler is only matched by an equally perplexing hatred for Lion fans.

I figured that was probably what it was. I forgot that there can't be two national games at once.

Seconding sulleymon on this one UMFan, thats what you gotta live with as far as Cutler is concerned. Basically he's going to throw at minimum a pick a game on a play like that, on a 3rd and 20, because thats who he is.

I'll take the 370+ yards and the ridiculously awesome TD to Forte at the end of the game when it looked like they might get themselves out of field goal range.

Posted
Yeah he's a boom or bust QB. But there's always room for improvement. I'll take this type of game out of him for the most part...that 3rd and 20 wasn't a killer, if it hadn't been returned a decent amount it would've been as effective as one of Maynard's weak ass punts.
