Bob Melvin looks like a front-runner right now.

Is this just your opinion or do you have a source? If true I wanna puke.

"Frontrunner" may have been a strong word (read the blurb late last night.) But, it appears he's on the list, and high enough that the Cubs brought him to Houston to meet over the weekend, after already conducting a phone interview.

The Cubs are in Houston, and so is Bob Melvin, according to the Daily Herald of Arlington, Illinois.

That would indicate that Melvin is having his first face-to-face discussions with the Cubs about their managerial position, after previously talking with them on the phone. He'd be the third person known to be interviewed by the Cubs, along with former Indians manager Eric Wedge and Cubs legend/Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg. The Cubs also will interview interim manager Mike Quade.

Melvin, who has been working in the scouting department for the Mets, is a former manager of the Mariners and Diamondbacks. He's also thought to be a candidate for the Mets job after Jerry Manuel is presumably fired.

From Jon Heyman's SI column:

The current belief among baseball people seems to be that Bobby Valentine is the favorite for the Mariners managing job, Eric Wedge for the Pirates job, Bob Melvin for the Brewers job, interim Mike Quade for the Cubs job and Fredi Gonzalez for the Braves job.

Fine with me, no reason to pay 4 mil for Girardi, I think Quade can do just fine, however he may be screwed anyway if the right offseason moves are not made.

Well, he's 1 for 1, as Fredi returns to Atlanta. That was the easy one though.

I know there are only so many managerial jobs available but I just don't see why anyone would want to take the Pirates job when you know there is virtually no way to succeed there.

I wouldn't want the job going into this season, but I think they have potential to be attractive destination when they need a replacement for the guy who takes over this offseason. They have some good talent in the minors that is still a few years off, but could become respectable in 4-5 years. With the #1 pick this year, Alvarez already up, Tallion has ace potential but is still really young, and between Alderson, Lincoln and Von Rosenberg they should at least get one 2/3 type guy out of that group.

Have they even contacted LaRussa?

I know it's pretty much a given that he's going back to St. Louis, but they could at least try.

Yeah, you don't want to be asleep at the wheel when it comes to LaRussa.

Obviously. You leave the sleeping at the wheel to him!

I could see a young guy or first-timer take the job to build a resume to be considered for better jobs in the future. Riggleman, Wedge, Girardi, Gonzalez, Quade, etc. are now part of the "insiders" that are considered for open positions because of some early success.

There are only 30 major league manager positions and probably 60 people who are "qualified" for the job plus another 60 who want to become qualified for the job. There's probably only a handful of guys who have any business turning down that gig. Jim Tracy was an established major league manager who went to Pittsburgh, then moved onto the job in Colorado. It's not just first timers who would have interest.

You all saw how the Orioles became one of the best teams in baseball once they hired Buck Showalter. Hiring a manager is important, and could be the difference between a 70 win team and a 90 win team.

That's my point. A managerial job in Pittsburgh is better than a coaching job or minor league job somewhere else. Do a decent job and you become one of the names that's always in the running for open managerial positions.
