Probably the most common complaint I've read/heard from Yankees fan/media about Girardi is how he handles his pitchers.

They're Yankee fans. I have this same debate with them. Nice people but they say that because at some point this season the bullpen probably blew a game. He tends to know who's got the hot hand when there's injuries, which there are. When the bullpen is healthy everyone's got a pretty well defined role.

Ask Josh Johnson what he thinks about Joe.

Also, he has Mariano at the end, the rest of their pen has been a mess for most of the year. I'm not real sure how many games you've watched but they probably weren't the same games I watched.

Really the marlins bullpen was bad to begin with 250 plus walks good for second worst in the majors. And while you can argue that some of them were because of Girardi's mismanagement the vast majority were most likely due to having inexperienced pitchers in the pen as a result of having a 15 million dollar payroll.

why?

Because Joe sent Johnson out after a 50 minute rain delay to pitch causing him to have Tommy John surgery.

ah ok. i'm sure nobody can directly tie the injury to that game, but it's pretty stupid (by the way it was 82 minutes, which is really bad - 50 minutes i could understand as some half innings can last close to a half hour, but you're looking at half a normal game time without pitching)

Reminds me of when Don Baylor sent Jon Lieber back out after a lengthy rain delay (I believe it was in 2002). Shortly thereafter Lieber needed TJS.

Ryne Sandberg's Iowa Cubs just ended the year with the most victories in the Pacific Coast League, yet are home watching four other teams in the playoffs.

Can you think of a feat that would better qualify someone to manage the Cubs?

Thus ending his career. The End.

Hey! You know what?!? I love that picture of Ryno Sandberg! Looks just like the one I had in mind for the next manager of the Chicago Cubs National League Baseball Team!

Yes!

Strangely enough, it was taken during batting practice at Wrigley on October 14, 2003. Dusty's NLCS idiocy may have been pivotal in spurring Sandberg onto his current career path.

It didn't end his career, but it was still a really, really bad decision and should be considered when looking at managerial candidates.

Anybody have thoughts on Tony Pena? He seemed to catch a bad break with the Royals just being an awful team, but still was part of the only winning season they've had since the dawn of time.

I'm sure he's not on the Cubs' radar.

Fredi Gonzalez shuts down Cubs according to writer from Fanhouse.

Get ready for Sandberg.

Obviously something wrong with his thinking if he prefers the Braves to the Cubs. :-k

In his blog today, Bruce Miles responded to a comment about the managing job and gave his opinion. Quote and link below.

I believe he's got the inside track. The Cubs did not call him the "interim" manager. (Alas, all managerial jobs are interim, aren't they?) He's done a nice job. He's not afraid to follow his convictions. He's good with the media (believe it or not, clubs ask questions about media-relations in job interviews for prospective managers). Why not?

Quade or Sandberg? I think I see the Cubs taking Quade, making him the proverbial sacraficial lamb for the next 2 seasons or so, while we rebuild, then hand it off to Sandberg at the point we expect to be contenders again.

I think there's a good chance we see Quade as manager and Sandberg as bench coach. I think I could live with that.

Sandberg's comments seem to indicate that he would not be happy with just being a bench coach.

I think Sandberg will leave the Cubs organization for another job if he doesn't get the managerial job this year.

He'd leave if he got another job as a manager. But how likely is it that another team will offer that? I don't think they will. His only options are likely to be bench-coach or managing in the minors (if he's not managing the Cubs).

I read somewhere, cant remember where, that the Mariners have interest in Sandberg, so its a possibility.
