it IS kinda like the captain of the titanic saying, "oh look, a lifeboat. don't mind if i do!"

Bruce Ismay did just that, but he's more akin to Hendry

But I digress

Damn people, why would anyone care if Lou wants to retire now to spend time with his mom? She's 90 years old and obviously not in good health and i for one applaud him doing it; can you imagine any head football coach doing this?

What are the negatives about Sandberg?
I hate Ryne Sandberg.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

Is this personal knowledge of him? did he spit on you or your son?

As Cubs fans we would gives a rats rear end about nice, as long as they win a WS. The nice guys though are remember fondly.

Actually I think Hendry would be more like Thomas Andrews

Is there any reason why people are so high on Trammel? I know nothing about him other than the fact that he looks like a good guy.

Personally, I like giving shots to guys who don't come with a ton of baggage in terms of being a "name" manager and all the ego and history that comes with it but do have at least some managing/coaching experience on the MLB level.

I'm not exactly sure what Trammel did with the Tigers can be considered managing anyhow. I was surprised how candid Hendry was about it but, recently in the news Trammel did seem to indicate that he was happier as a bench coach. I believe after his last bad stretch. I think Brenly is the obvious choice but most likely will be spurned in favor of Sandberg.

I'm torn about Sandberg. I'm not sure why all the hate for him. Why has he been so bad? What kind of in game moves does he make that are wrong.

Seriously, if someone wants to summarize the Sandberg argument in a new thread, it may be worth stickying the thing.

My gut feeling is that Ricketts has already told Hendry he wants Sandberg in there and the rest is a dog and pony show. Say what you will about Hendry but my impression is that he would never string a guy along he respects as much as Trammell if he knew there was no chance he could get the job. Since Quade is not going to get hired anywhere else anyway Hendry would just be able to tell him to have fun for 6 weeks with his dream job and if catches lightning in a bottle maybe he can steal the job away. Plus he is a real organizational guy so whatever Hendry tells him to do regarding what players to use, etc for evaluation purposes Quade will probably go along with.

On a side note, I can't believe that Lou and Trammell wasted the 2 weeks Soto was hurt playing Hill every day when they could have gotten an extended look at how Castillo can handle the big leagues.

I have been complaining about this for a week now! "Gotta have a veteran catcher in there... don't want some rookie making rookie mistakes."

SO it's ok if it's a veteran making rookie mistakes?

Just in case anyone really cares...

First-base coach Ivan DeJesus will move to third base and take Quade's place. According to team sources, minor-league outfield and base-running instructor Bob Dernier, the former Cubs outfielder from the 1984 Eastern Division championship team, is the most likely choice to replace DeJesus as first base coach.

It's probably no coincidence Hill played in Lou's final game.

Yep.

Exactly. Which will be a shock to the people who posted in the "FIRE LOU" thread every time there was one issue with the lineup.

Lou did several things this year that I just really didn't understand and outright hated. His first three years, I'd say I was generally pleased with him as a manager. Certainly not 100% of the time, but overall I thought he was fine. The two biggest things I was worried about coming in to his tenure were SP "abuse" and favoring mediocre (or worse) vets over young players. He really didn't have a problem in either area, IMO (except when it came to the bullpen at times).

Too bad he's going out like this with this very poor team.

Posted

I'm sad to see such an embarrassing sendoff. I didn't hate Lou to the levels that many did, although he was definitely good for some boneheaded decisions.

Eh, we had a couple shots in the postseason under his tenure. 2 pretty good teams to point to (not that it was only Lou). It's too bad we decided to suck in those opportunities, but I can honestly say I hold no ill will for the guy.

Let's build this thing back up and get back to the postseason. Preferrably without several more years of this crud.

the high likelihood that Hendry is going to replace Lou with small-ball Ryno doesn't mean people should be content with the increasing number of bad decisions Lou made. if we have to accept stupid decisions because the GM is so bad he's going to replace an old, maybe senile manager with a younger, psycho manager, maybe those of us that want the team to be competitive should just give up and find a different team.

Getting fed up with managerial decisions is a time-honored baseball fan tradition. I can't remember a manager who didn't have a core group of fans who simply point out every boneheaded decision he makes. It just happens. The next Cub manager -- same thing, there will be a "Sandberg dumb moves" thread, guaranteed. Or insert the next Cub managers' name.

That's not to say Lou didn't make dumb decisions, or that he didn't deserve the criticism. I just don't see any future managers escaping the same sort of scrutiny.

I understand it, but I do not applaud him for it. I cannot imagine a competent football organization conducting operations in this manner, and I wish the Chicago Cubs were not run like a beer league team.

Do you think he would have resigned from a first place ballclub? Would he have quit in August 2008 if an immediate family member had taken ill?

Charlie Manuel.

One really good team, two slightly better than average ones and a crap one.

People forget 5 NL teams had a better record than the Cubs in 2007. They were nothing special and would not have contended for the wild card if they had to settle for that.
