Is there anyone even truly exceptional in the draft this year where having a higher draft pick than what they have now could actually have a good chance of making a difference? People are talking like there's some can't miss prospect or prospects in the top 5...or is it just the usual excuse to pretend like someone doesn't care or wants them to lose?

Anthony Rendon even though he had a pretty bad injury. If the Cubs finish the year in the spot they are now I'd be thrilled to get Sonny Gray.

The top of this draft should have one of the strongest groups of college players in awhile. Tryptamine mentioned Anthony Rendon, who suffered an unfortunate ankle injury a few weeks back, but should be healthy and ready to go next season. Essentially, he's been one of the best hitters in college baseball history and probably would have been taken over Bryce Harper had he been eligible this year. There's also a really nice group of college pitchers in Gerrit Cole, Matt Purke, Sonny Gray, and Taylor Jungmann.

I don't know a whole lot about the HS end of things, although that stuff tends to be in flux year to year.

The problem with Anthony Rendon is the Cubs aren't going to get the 1st pick.

The top of next year's draft even beyond the top player is worthy of getting excited over, unlike the past few drafts.

This game needs to end so I can go home.

Gee..... I wish I could go home when this game is over. [sigh]

On the road, Fred?

And that's what I figured. I guess what I'm more curious about is whether or not there's really a huge difference this year between having something like the 4th pick or, say, the 8th or 9th?

Wilken may take the same guy regardless of position. At least the higher selection gives you the option, but more importantly, may be the thing that pushes Ricketts over the edge to deciding to make a move. An 88 loss season may allow Hendry to convince him a couple minor changes could turn everything around, but flirting with 100 losses could make that more difficult.

Yeah, I suppose. I just always find it tough to effectively root for them to do as badly as possible.

When they are theoretically in the race and just a couple games under .500 it's tough. Once they really hit the skids, it's not that hard.
