most people probably haven't noticed because the team is terrible and irrelevant, but the d'backs have a bullpen that is so bad that baseball prospectus has evaluated them as the worst bullpen in at least 60 years and, since bullpen work wasn't that common before 1950, essentially the worst bullpen ever.

here are some of the ugly numbers:

record: 9-20

ERA: 6.50 (the next-worst bullpen ERA is 4.99!!! league average is 4.03)

BB/9 IP: 4.73 (second-worst in mlb)

BAA: .296 (second-worst in mlb, league average is .253)

OBPA: .377 (worst by .013)

SLGA: .474 (worst by .020)

OPSA: .851 (worst by .033)

Save %: 56

H/9 IP: 10.63

HR: 41 (in 270 IP... that's BAD)

WHIP: 1.71!!! (worst by .09, league average is 1.39)

K/BB: 1.46 (worst; league average 2.09)

K/9 IP: 6.90 (actually only 23rd)

comparing this to the padres, who have the best bullpen in the game. the padres are better by:

3.66 in ERA (there are 10 TEAMS that have a bullpen ERA of 3.66 or better)

2.15 BB/9 IP

.083 in BAA

.103 in OBPA

.140 in SLGA

.243 in OPSA

16 HR

0.65 WHIP

2.32 K/BB

2.84 K/9 IP

boy it's a good thing these guys exist, or the cubs would have the worst bullpen in baseball:

record: cubs 11-26, d-backs 13-27

ERA: cubs 5.15 (before getting drilled by the pirates tonight - 2nd worst), d-backs 5.92 (worst)

WHIP: cubs 1.56 (2nd worst), d-backs 1.63 (worst)

walks: cubs 198 (worst in baseball), d-backs 184

OBP against: cubs .353 (2nd worst in MLB), d-backs .368 (worst)

SLG against: cubs .414 (only 10th worst), d-backs .454 (worst)

OPS against: cubs .768 (6th worst), d-backs .822 (worst)

I have never understood why the Cubs pitching staff continually walks more batters than other teams. Is it a Rothschild thing? I understand that usually "power arms" will walk more batters, but seriously... throw a freaking strike once in a while.

The past couple years, it's simply been a Marmol thing.

Three more today, despite three strikeouts and a save.

Not to derail the thread, but I feel like hitters are starting to "figure" Marmol out. They realize they aren't going to be able to make good contact against him, so they just stand there and take a walk after 7 or 8 pitches. Then Marmol inevitably loses it under the pressure and gives up a hit or two (or just walks more batters).

Inevitably gives up a hit or two? Please check his batting average against, compare that to every pitcher who ever lived and then get back to me.
