that being said, fairly generic outfielders like luke scott and josh willingham don't have much trouble reaching those stats, so it's pathetic that we haven't developed a young outfielder who can hit a few home runs and put up above average offensive production since billy williams.

It's not just power-hitting outfielders. Between Girardi debuting during the tail end of 1989 and Soto playing a game in 2005, who was the best position player to come up through the Cubs' system to actually play for the Cubs? Doug Glanville? Corey Patterson? Ryan Theriot?

Carlos Zambrano? Kidding.

Highest career OPS by hitters who came up through the Cubs system since 89ish min 400 career PA including Walton and pre Soto.

.786, 106 OPS+ Hee Seop Choi

.755, 102 OPS+ Dwight Smith

.746, 89 OPS+ Brant Brown

.742, 100 OPS+ Rick Wilkins

.730, 88 OPS+ Ozzie Timmons

.719, 87 OPS+ Roosevelt Brown

.717, 92 OPS+ Derrick May

.709, 85 OPS+ Kevin Orie

.708, 92 OPS+ Jerome Walton

.704, 83 OPS+ Ryan Theriot

.697, 80 OPS+ Corey Patterson

.695, 78 OPS+ Doug Glanville

.693, 83 OPS+ Bobby Hill

.666, 72 OPS+ Joe Girardi

And I left a few out...

edit: yes i was wrong about murton. dunno why i included him.

Haha does Murton even count? He was already a good prospect for Boston when we got him

I thought of this thread when watching bot 9th between the Jays and Yanks tonight. Rivera had just blown his first save of the season. Bases juiced for Patterson, 1 out. Rothschild comes out of the dugout to talk to Rivera. Patterson promptly swings and misses at 2 consecutive eye-level fastballs. On the 3rd fastball, he starts swinging, but it becomes a defensive swing once he realizes the fastball is en route directly to his face. Ground ball to the 3rd base bag results in a 5-3 double play, Rivera out of the jam. (Jays still won in 10.) Rothschild watched Dusty ruin Corey, so he knew exactly what to do there.

He's always been a sucker for high heat.

I wouldn't solely blame Dusty, but the Cubs organization narrow-mindedness concerning black CFs certainly hampered his development from the second he left Lansing.

Truth. He had enough problems, no reason to pigeonhole him.

Poor CPatt. He was so good in 03 and 04. It's a shame people remember him more for how bad he was when he was called up (when he was obviously not ready) and before he left (when dusty was busy trying to turn him into a slap hitter).

If Dusty didn't mess with him, I'd like to think he'd still be hitting .260-.275 with 25-30 homers and playing great defense.

I saw Corey play this weekend at Fenway. He still has more holes in his swing than a...

Well, you get the picture. His pitch recognition is still awful and if you get one strike ahead of him, he's an out. He keeps getting chances because "speed doesn't slump," but he is what he is; a 4th outfielder.

Anyway, this is a Starlin Castro thread who's got plate coverage beyond Corey's wildest dreams...

he was also a near 5 (4.9 to be precise) win player for the cubs in 2004

yes, he was very good that year.

unfortunately, pitchers adjusted to the holes in his approach, and he was unable to adjust as well. too bad.

He's approaching Prior territory. If he ever plays a big part in a playoff team, he might eclipse him

castro doesn't need to do that, he has the pujolsian ability to hit bad pitches hard.

I would say Castro more like Vlad/Tony Gwynn in the "hit bad pitches hard". I've never heard Pujols like that before or being a "bad ball hitter".

i judge that by observing that he doesn't really take a lot of walks for the caliber of hitter he is, although he is over 100 per season at this point as pitchers have abandoned all hope in getting him out, nor does he strike out a lot. which is pretty indicative of bad-pitch hitters. he gets good plate coverage and he may not look like he's hitting a bad pitch or, rather, a good pitch, but he's consistently excellent with any pitch, pretty much.

For me 'Wow' isn't cutting it anymore. This kid and his two-strike prowess is mind-blowing. Only 5 K's nearing 100 AB's at age 21. I feel like he has a shot at a hit every plate appearance, whereas with guys like Soriano and Byrd I just cringe and hope.

random notes:

Starlin Castro has 35 hits in the Cubs' first 20 games. Only one Cubs player in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) has had more hits in the team's first 20 games: Frank Demarree had 36 in 1936.

from after 15 games played:

Starlin Castro has 28 hits in the Cubs' first 15 games. That is the most in the Live Ball Era by a Cubs player in the team's first 15 games. Riggs Stephenson (1929) and Hall-of-Famer Billy Herman (1936) had 27 hits in the team's first 15 games.

Castro has also now has 6 3-hit games. That is the most 3-hit games in the first 15 games of the season by a Cubs player in the Live Ball era. It's also one shy of the most by any player on any team. Kenny Lofton had 7 3-hit games in 1997 in the Braves first 15 games. 9 other players had 6 3-hit games: Joe Carter (1995), Dante Bichette (1988), Cecil Cooper (1982), Chet Lemon (1979), Pete Rose (1976), Hank Aaron (1959), Stan Musial (1957), Wally Moon (1955), Cecil Travis (1941)

Instead of Camo, the Padres should wear shirts like that with a picture of themselves on every player.
