I think it is safe to say that fans will become more regional over time. Sure, there's DirecTV, but the ones buying that are probably the older crowd who grew up watching WGN (guys like many of us on the board here).

The days of kids across the nation becoming Cub fans might be coming to an end.

I'm asked all the time how a kid from Arkansas becomes a cub fan. That's easy --- Cubs were on my TV 150 times per year.

The Cubs are still on my TV, more than 150 times a year

because I HAVE DIRECTV

i honestly don't understand why anyone who can get it doesn't.

Because I don't feel like paying $180 to watch maybe half the games. There's so many on during the day that it's hard to justify paying that much for really so few games. My cable bill is way too high already.

BUT MAN YOU REALLY NEED TO SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY YOU DONT HAVE AND GET IT EVEN AS JUST A STATUS SYMBOL TO TELL EVERYONE ON THE INTERNET HOW COOL YOU ARE!!!

I don't know about you but I didn't control the TV provider decisions in my house as a kid.

i just looked my dad right in the eye and let him know who was in charge.

then we wrestled, and if i pinned him, we got satellite tv. if he won. i could only watch WGN when america's funniest home videos was on

I totally get the DirecTV thing. However, it cost a lot of money and chances are that it's not going to cause anyone to be a cub fan. A cub fan is going to buy it.

CUBS are 14-21 when WGN broadcasts the game

CUBS are 20-15 when CSN broadcasts the game

Go CUBS !!

That's another thing I don't understand. The past few years, it seems as though the Cubs have played significantly better on CSN than on WGN.

Broadcast all 162 games on CSN and we're sure to win it all.

I think he stated pretty clearly that he doesn't understand why anyone who can get it doesn't. If you don't have the money to afford it that means you can't get it.

I thought the whole reason the Cubs weren't on WGN as much anymore was because WGN is owned by the Tribune Company. The Tribune Company doesn't own the Cubs anymore. Is there more to it?

I would think the fact that the Cubs own a 20% stake in CSN Chicago has something to do with it as well, as the gradual migration to cable started before the Cubs even went up for sale.

The games were decreasing on WGN steadily anyway, but I do think the fact that the Trib is gone accounts for the stark drop in games this year. I think there were 70-some WGN games in recent years and this year there are under 60.

It looks like it was 60 regular season games last year and 63 the year before.

Like I said, clearly the sale has nothing to do with the decrease in WGN games. 8-)

Most children don't make the decisions about what cable company to use.

You still have hundreds of thousands of non-Chicago based adults who are fans of the Cubs, and many have children, meaning their kids could just as easily end up being Cubs fans as those people who grew up in the 70's and 80's with no other options.
