if kerry wood snubbed albert pujols at a 2003 all star game we'd all have the biggest boner ever.

big ups to votto

really? I don't think that's true.

John Holmes has the biggest boner ever

I wouldn't expect him to become best friends with Byrd, but I would expect any player to shake his hand and tell him "good job". Not liking the Cubs because they are a rival is different than not appreciating a job well done.

Methinks Voto has a little inferiority complex. I bet he has tiny feet.

If the Cubs do nothing else this year (which they probably won't), I hope they never lose another game this season to the Reds and singlehandedly knock them out of the playoffs.

Then just maybe Votto will have a legitimate reason to hate a classy individual like Marlon Byrd.

He doesn't need a reason, he's a meathead.

He probably had a high school coach who told him he had to hate the other team's players or else he was a [expletive], or something. Our coaches used to go apoplectic when we had friendships with guys from other high schools.

I was hoping for this anyway, but now it'll be much sweeter.

it's a douche move for sure. but it's also nice to see a player who genuinely hates a team speak his mind about it. adds some spice to the game.

Who is Joey Votto? :?

That's the first thing I thought of when I heard the comments. Love ya, Mad Dog.

The Bartman [expletive] is media created, The only people that have talked about the guy since 2004 are on ESPN.

Votto is an effed-up guy. Living in Cincy, I've heard plenty of stuff about him and he's a mess. Not to mention a grade-A douche.

Curious what Reds44 has to say about this. Hopefully not "This really shows how much intensity Votto has" like every other Reds fan has been saying. This really has nothing to do with the Cubs, this has to do with an immature, classless ballplayer taking a cheap shot against a player who is obviously respected and well-liked by his peers.

When I read it, my first reaction wasn't "YEAH JOEY!!!!" that's for sure. I'm not sure what the point of it was. It rubbed me the wrong way, and normally I love when guys run their mouth. This was just stupid though, especially when you consider it was the All-Star game. It's not like I'm upset he said it or anything, it just seems stupid and petty to me, though.

It would have been different if he said it after we played you guys, at least it would have made more sense. Like I said, this was just petty though.

lol, that's correct.

If the Reds win the WS in seven games and he hits a short porch HR in the GAB to win the game he should publicly lick Byrd's anus.

Btw I understand if you guys are calling Votto a douche or whatever for his comments, if somebody said this about the Reds I'm sure I'd have the same reaction. Calling him a douche or whatever because of his past doesn't make a lot of sense to me, though. Yeah, he had emotional issues because of his dad's death last year, but I'm not sure how that makes him a bad guy or a douche. Never heard anything bad said about Votto as a person.

I don't understand why people hate the Cubs so much. They are the most historically futile team in all of sport. It just doesn't add up for me and I dont think its anything I will ever fully grasp. With that said Votto is acting completely unprofessional.

Lovin' the Meyers avatar, by the way.

At least a few of us recognize it.

From John Fay's twitter:

Votto on Cubs comment: I was joking. I knew it a Chicago reporter. I was laughing when I said it. I respect a the Cubs players. #reds

Joey Votto said he was joking when he made his “I hate the Cubs” statement after the All-Star Game.

“I was laughing when I said it,” he said. “I realized it was a Chicago reporter.”

“That being said, I respect all the Chicago Cub players. They’re some of the most professional in the game. I don’t have a problem with any of the Chicago guys. I enjoy playing against them. I just don’t like their fans. I can’t stand hearing that ‘Go Cubs Go’ song.

Votto said he did congratulation Marlon Byrd after Byrd’s key play late in the game.

“You can watch the video,” he said. “I gave Marlon a high 5 and patted him on the back. I was one of the first guys to congratulation him in Chicago when he was picked for All-Star team. It certainly has nothing to do with the players. If ask the players, I’m perfectly nice to them and professional on the field.

“It was a laughing, spur-of-the-moment thing. Just because we’re in that setting for one day that all of the sudden we’re super close and we’re tight. We’re still competing.”

Sounds like he has the same feeling as pretty much every non-Cubs fan in America.

I think that's funny because pretty much everywhere I go people are pretty cool to Cubs fans. I've never had a problem in another stadium. And usually you get in conversations with other fans and they talk about liking the Cubs or wanting them to win. I think it may only be the hicks from Cincy and STL that have problems. Them and the cheeseheads.

Gee, and with comments like that you wonder why people in St. Louis have strong opinions about Cubs fans.

Go to a Chicago Rush game sometime. Chicagoland has it's fair share of toothless wonders.

It sounds like Votto was joking around, and Bruce Levine was trying to get some headlines (that's who the Chicago reporter was).

"If" Votto was serious, and I don't think he was, it would fit with everything I've heard and seen from Dusty Baker teams.

Marlon Byrd already refuted the story, saying he spoke with Votto quite a bit.
