Reds' Votto dislikes Cubs, disses All-Star teammate Byrd

By David Brown

Apparently, Cincinnati Reds slugger Joey Votto(notes) never caught the All-Star spirit.

Votto refused to congratulate Chicago Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd(notes) on his performance — one that helped the National League claim home-field advantage in the World Series — because Votto's temporary teammate comes from a despised division rival.

Byrd made a head's up play in right field that forced Boston's David Ortiz(notes) at second base, and also worked a key walk in a seventh-inning rally that led to the NL's first victory at the All-Star game since 1996.

Such an effort certainly is worth a high five ... a handshake ... a wave ... a wink ... a nod ... a glance ... a happy thought.

Not from Pal Joey.

Via the planetary front-runner, ESPN:

"I don't like the Cubs," Votto said. "And I'm not going to pat anybody with a Cubs uniform on the back. But because he made that really cool play, it turned out to be a really cool experience. I'm really glad we got the win today."

What a leech — and a sorry excuse for an All-Star.

Even if the harmless Cubs weren't 10 1/2 games behind the first-place Reds in the NL Central, you're supposed to check the intraleague rivalries at the door for the All-Star Game. Ask ... oh, anybody who's ever made a team for either side.

Votto obviously is new here.

And, how did he help the NL win? Oh, yeah, he didn't. Votto went 0 for 2.

It's a good thing Votto had Reds teammates on either side (Brandon Phillips(notes), pictured, and Scott Rolen(notes) to the left) during introductions, or else he would have had to interact with the "enemy." The horror.

He should have made the NL roster the first time around but needed to win a final Internet vote to be recognized. The "Vote Votto" process should have made Votto especially happy to be in Anaheim. Yet, he seems to be harboring lingering bitterness about ... something.

Or maybe that's just how he is.

What piss poor sportsmanship....It's the national league TEAM...Game and rivalry aside, its a sport with bunch of guys having a good time, playing baseball,it's not the world or you take something up personally with someone for no reason. During the all star break especially, it's just supposed to be a laid back, good time for all the players. What an ass.

I don't care much but Byrd's play gives the NL homefield advantage in the World Series and the Reds have a chance to play in that. Byrd could have a hand in the Reds winning the World Series. You might want to at least tip your hat.

I think it's less you find people who hate the Cubs as opposed to just really not liking Cubs fans, which is completely understandable.

Yea, I'm in Cincy and that's pretty much it right there. They don't like us because we take over their park when the Cubs are in town, we have a high payroll, and we blame our futility on Bartman and a goat. I heard it all day today.

They are the stereotypical redheaded stepchildren. Fairweather fans at their finest. It's brutal living in a town full of Reds fans, especially when the Reds are winning.

I really hate living in this redneck town sometimes.

Are there any Cubs fans actually blame losing on a goat or Bartman or does the media just create this?

On another note, I suppose the media can be partially to blame for Cub hate. They play up the lovable loser crap and all that stuff and I suppose other fanbases probably get sick of that.

Who is Joey Votto? :?

That's the first thing I thought of when I heard the comments. Love ya, Mad Dog.

The Bartman [expletive] is media created, The only people that have talked about the guy since 2004 are on ESPN.

Votto is an effed-up guy. Living in Cincy, I've heard plenty of stuff about him and he's a mess. Not to mention a grade-A douche.

Curious what Reds44 has to say about this. Hopefully not "This really shows how much intensity Votto has" like every other Reds fan has been saying. This really has nothing to do with the Cubs, this has to do with an immature, classless ballplayer taking a cheap shot against a player who is obviously respected and well-liked by his peers.

I've never met a real Cubs fan who blames Bartman or a curse. The only people that think Cubs fans do that are the media and fans of other teams.

glad to see my votto hate justified. you never heard this kind of talk while he was here with the bats. methinks he's upset cub fans travel better to cincy than cincy fans do. especially when the cubs aren't good.

btw, i blame bartman only for getting in the players heads making them feel like there was a curse. my opinion only but it seemed to me in game 7 the team were going around waiting for the bottom to drop out.

if kerry wood snubbed albert pujols at a 2003 all star game we'd all have the biggest boner ever.

big ups to votto

If Pujols was instrumental in an NL win in 2003, we would have all been thrilled that one of the most hated Cardinals could have helped the Cubs get home field advantage in the World Series.
