When I was in high school in Wabash, Indiana (1976--78) Steinbrenner attended a high school football game at Wabash. One of his relatives (I don't remember if it was a son, nephew, or grandson) played for the opposing team.

Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Horrible last 24 hours for the Yankees. Reminds me of when Johnny Red Kerr and Norm Van Lier died on the same day.

Nothing lifts the spirits like acquiring some high priced talent. Expect to see an All Star or two go the Yankees way within the next 2 weeks

It gave me chills.

Why? An old man in bad health for a decade finally died.

I don't know why. He's always been there. Mostly as the guy I loved to hate in baseball. I guess it is a strange reaction to have given the situation.

He seemed like one of those larger-than-life iconic figures. It's always a little hard to grasp when they're first gone.

I wish he would have waited until AFTER the AS game to croak. The Yankees suckfest is going to be insufferable tonight.

So don't watch. The ASG sucks anyway.

Bingo bango boingo.

Biggest waste of time there is.

I would put the All-Pro game ahead of it.

He hasn't been around for years. He's been in hiding because he's been failing for so long. And the announcer guy was 99 years old. I don't get how anybody could be surprised by either death.

Well, at least we can still hate his family. They're not going anywhere.

He's got some weird ties to Indiana. I think he went to Culver Military Academy. He also has some ties to Columbus OH, that's why the Clippers were the AAA team for so long.

He was an assistant football coach at Purdue for a bit.

Yes, he did go to Culver. That's who was playing my school when he came to the game. I had forgotten the name until you mentioned it.

Culver would make sense for him. I wasn't aware he was an assistant at Purdue until earlier today.

Understood. I didn't really mean I was surprised. It just made me stop for a second and I got that "feeling."

Then I realized all the things you just said.

In terms of the game, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens to the Yankees. I suspect very little, at least in the short term. But long term? Hopefully they eventually drop back down to longer term suckage.

People have been saying that for about 90 years now.

So you're saying they're due?

Well, they did have a stretch from the mid 60's to the mid 70's and from the early 80's to the early 90's where they weren't very good. The Yankees have been down before, but they always get right back up.

Blips on the radar. Anyone hoping for Yankees to go through a sustained period of truly bad play are really longing for a serious outlier, especially with how they have their money set up now.
