In terms of the game, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens to the Yankees. I suspect very little, at least in the short term. But long term? Hopefully they eventually drop back down to longer term suckage.

People have been saying that for about 90 years now.

Well, they did have a stretch from the mid 60's to the mid 70's and from the early 80's to the early 90's where they weren't very good. The Yankees have been down before, but they always get right back up.

Blips on the radar. Anyone hoping for Yankees to go through a sustained period of truly bad play are really longing for a serious outlier, especially with how they have their money set up now.

The only way that they have a chance to suck is a salary cap.

Probably that and some kind of mandatory salary base, too.

The next CBA ought to be interesting.

Steinbrenner was awesome in Seinfeld.

Moonlighting for Tyler Chicken. Pretty impressive, George. Days with the New York Yankees and nights in Arkansas with a top-flight bird outlet. And a hen supervisor to boot. I am blown. Bloooown away. Blown George. Blooooooown!

The more stories that emerge about his random, unheralded acts of philanthropy and kindness the more I wonder how he couldn't come up with someone more qualified to extort Winfield.

NYT article on Seinfeld and Steinbrenner

After reading less than a page, Steinbrenner angrily threw down the script. “I thought you said this doesn’t involve me?” he bellowed.

Sussman tried over and over to reassure him that this script contained no cameo for the owner.

“Then,” Steinbrenner demanded, “what are all of these references to ‘George’ in the script?”

Sussman was stunned but tried to explain: “ ‘George’ is George Costanza. He is a character on the show. He is a friend of Seinfeld’s, and he plays the role of one of your employees.”

Steinbrenner acted incredulous, intoning: “I thought you were smarter than that. Don’t you see? This is how they are trying to get at me. They have named their character after me.”

They have a significant financial advantage that isn't going to change. The only way to negate a significant financial advantage is through actions like an inept front office that ladens its team with inflexible contracts.
