WABC in New York is reporting that George Steinbrenner is in "extremely critical" condition after suffering a massive heart attack in his Tampa home Monday night.

Thoughts and prayers to the Steinbrenner family.

I really wish he had some insane demand, like he wanted to be forever preserved Lenin-style in some ridiculous crystal coffin that is suspended and rotating above CF in Yankee Stadium at all times.

Clank one off the old man and it's a ground rule double!

I wonder how history will ultimately view him. As an owner who would spare no expense in trying to win a championship or someone who helped drive up salaries that half of the competition is eliminated on a yearly basis.

Probably a mix of both, but he definitely helped the game of baseball a lot more than he hurt it

The latter is a more esoteric concept that only people in Kansas City and Pittsburgh probably buy. I think he'll definitely be remembered more as the former.

I wish he would have waited until AFTER the AS game to croak. The Yankees suckfest is going to be insufferable tonight.

So don't watch. The ASG sucks anyway.

Nah - The All-Star game is great. Having it mean HFA for the Series isn't great - but the game itself, love seein all the best players playing in one game.

When I was in high school in Wabash, Indiana (1976--78) Steinbrenner attended a high school football game at Wabash. One of his relatives (I don't remember if it was a son, nephew, or grandson) played for the opposing team.

some of the stuff he did in the '80s was pretty embarrassing, but after his ban was lifted he was a little more laid back and did what a rich owner should do - give his people the resources to win without meddling in every transaction.

He meddled up until the day he lost his mind and had to be cast aside.
