Nice phrasing, MLB

But Prior, who a posted a 42-29 record and a 3.51 ERA in five seasons as a young pitching phenom with the Cubs from 2002-06, isn't ready to throw in the towel just yet.

They probably used it like the normal phrase because only stupid meathead Cub fans make towel jokes because they're too [expletive] ignorant to realize what the towel drill even is

YUMA, Ariz. -- Former Chicago Cubs All-Star Mark Prior pitched two scoreless innings in relief and struck out five in a row to help the Orange County Flyers beat Tijuana Cimarrones 3-2 in an Independent League game on Wednesday.

The Flyers won on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game of a doubleheader.

Prior, who was signed by the Flyers last week, worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam by striking out the next two batters to get out of the inning. He struck out the side in the sixth.

Prior hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006. After being the second pick of the 2001 draft by the Cubs, Prior spent five seasons in Chicago, earning All-Star honors in 2003 and battling various injuries. The right-hander had two surgeries on his pitching shoulder.

i can't wait to see him in the majors again.

From what I can tell, Prior has pitched 5 innings, struck out 10, and allowed no earned runs since he signed with the Flyers. A stats page on their site would be nice.

I know Prior is a shadow of his former self, but could you even begin to imagine what it would feel like to step into the batters box of a lowly independent league against Mark Prior? It's either terrifying or awesome... or both

I've batted against former major leaguers and high draft picts in non-professional leagues and it's neither terrifying nor awesome. When you are in the box it's see ball hit ball. Who is dealing is means nothing. That's not to say I was remotely successful either, b/c mostly I wasn't, but when i've been in the box it doesn't matter.

Did any of them share a similar pedigree to Mark Prior

I had a couple of AB's off Prior the summer after his senior year of high school. He was getting some innings in prior to starting his Freshman year with Vanderbilt. We were playing in an 18+ league in Nashville. I think he only threw 4 innings. If I remember correctly, I was going into my Junior year of college. That same day Joe Blanton was pitching for our team and I was catching. Looking back, I got to see the business end of a couple of pretty good pitchers.

I Bought a car off of Brian Dorsett, looking back I got to see the business end of a really [expletive] catcher.

I never even knew Dorsett played in the majors until my dad told me a few days ago.

How does that Independent League compare to say, single A in the Minor Leagues?

Just about equivalent to low A, maybe slightly higher (but not high-A) I believe.

I know the talent level is nowhere near Major League, but it's still an encouraging sign that he's pitching for the first time in 4 years.

We should sign Prior and Wood this offseason for the pen, then move Z there permanently.

It's time for the 3 Aces to ride again. 8-)

Man, I would love it if he could somehow make it back to the Cubs.

Fixed... I would love for him to come back strong starter or reliever and make it back to Chicago. I know that sounds too story book but I was so amazed/excited every time I saw him pitch. I thought I was witnessing one of the best to toe the rubber in our Era.

yeah considering that the cubs were throwing him under the bus and strongly implying to the press and all their trolls in the media (paul sullivan) that there was nothing wrong with him, i don't think he's too interested in joining the cubs again.

If new ownership hired a different GM, i would put the chances at greater than zero. As things stand, I don't think Prior would be too interested in an offer made by the Cubs....unless it was the only offer.
