guys, when half of these players make up fake injuries to get out of the ASG, Silva and Marmol will be in

I wish we were doing so well that our guys had to fake injuries :(

This is a joke. Charlie Manuel picked a terrible team.

Some of the head-scratching selections in the AL were due to the MLB's rule that each team needs to be represented. That's why you see Carmona in there ahead of Felix Hernandez. Girardi had his hands tied for most of the selections, though he should have taken Youk as his 3B over ARod.

But Manuel just picked horrible players. Infante may be the worst All-Star ever. Zimmerman deserves that spot and Marmol deserves Capps' spot.

Neither the HOF nor the MLB can continue to assign any significance to this game when this stuff is going on.

Joe Girardi says :hello: .

With that said, I am definately in favor of taking voting away from the fans (because as a whole, fans have no clue how to vote) and removing the "every team has to be represented" clause.

Amazing how in 50 fewer PAs, Soto has very similar numbers to all star catcher brian mccann.

Isn't McCann a much better defender where as Soto is a bit below avg? Also Soto went on a big slump where he was batting .150 over an extended period. Plus he's on a terrible team.

I don't think I agree with either of those defensive assessments. I don't understany why Geovany having a slump should matter. Every player slumps

Fans vote I think should still factor in, as it is mainly a game for the fans. However, give fans 50% of the vote and baseball personnel (managers, coaches, players, execs) the other 50% of say. And the "each team has to be represented" rule is crap. Make sure the home fans have someone to root for, but that rule has kept out some very deserving players over the years.

The All Star game quit being a "game for the fans" as soon as Selig made home field advantage in the World Series go to the winner. If they want it to be for the fans then make it meaningless like it should be, because the fans shouldn't have a say in helping decide who gets home field.

This is exactly my stance. I'm fine with the ASG being "for the fans" and an exhibition. And if it is, then keep the fan vote and the "every team represented" clause.

However, if it is "for the fans" and an exhibition, then take away the HFA stipulation. If the Cubs were legit World Series contenders, seeing Omar Infante out there trying to drive in the tying run in the ninth would not be a good sight.

I'd agree with your point more if Omar Infante was selected by fans.

Just for the sake of doing it, I figured I'd put together a pair of all-star teams based almost solely on OPS. I included some guys on the bench with lower OPS' than others just to not have 10 first basemen on the roster, but I went highest OPS at each position.

AL: NL:

C - Posada C - Olivo
1B - Morneau 1B - Votto
2B - Cano 2B - Prado
SS - Alex Gonzalez SS - Furcal
3B - Beltre 3B - Rolen
LF - Hamilton LF - Manny
CF - Hunter CF - Rasmus
RF - Boesch RF - Ethier
DH - Youkilis DH - Pujols

BN BN
V Martinez Soto
M Cabrera Huff
Pedroia Phillips
Jeter Hanley
Bautista Wright
N Cruz Hart
Wells Torres
Crawford Willingham
Thome Dunn
M Young Adrian Gonzalez
Konerko Tulowitzki

That's with a 150 PA minimum. Might be too low, but it seemed like a good number.

I'm curious just how many such teams you could make before Omar Infante made the roster.

It'd actually just be 2-3 of them in the AL. Alex Gonzalez has a sub-.800 OPS and Jeter is at .753. It'd be a few more in the NL.

The ASG has never been meaningless and never will be as long as sports writers use ASG appearances as a criterion for HOF selection. It's a joke, I know, but selection to the ASG matters and having it in the hands of the fans is unacceptable. Then again the managers don't do any better in picking the teams so I'm not sure who deserves that responsibility.

Why don't they let the fans vote (so we can still feel special) but just change the numbers and put the deserving people in.

But the hall of fame doesn't matter either.
