So who are we going to play...?

TBD this afternoon. It'll be the 2nd team out of group D.

 

Right now its

 

Ghana 4 (1)

Germany 3 (3)

Serbia 3 (0)

Australia 1 (-4)

 

Ghana plays Germany

Serbia plays Australia

 

If Ghana and Serbia win, they both advance and the USA plays Serbia

If Ghana and Australia win, then they both advance and USA plays Australia

If Ghana wins and Serbia and Aussie tie, then Ghana and Serbia advance and USA plays Serbia

If Germany and Serbia win, then they both advance and USA plays Serbia unless Serbia wins by 3 more goals than Germany does.

If Germany and Australia win, then Germany and Ghana advance unless Australia makes up a 5 goals in GD over Ghana, so the USA plays Ghana

If Germany wins and Serbia and Aussie tie, then Germany advances and the runner up gets confusing.

 

Right now Ghana leads GD 1-0, but if they lost, at the very least it would be a tied GD, which means GS comes into play. Right now Ghana has scored 2 goals and Serbia 1, so if Ghana ends up scoring the same number of goals as Serbia does today (or more), they would advance. If Serbia scores 1 more goal than Ghana today, the GD and GS is tied, meaning I believe Ghana advances by beating Serbia 1-0 in H2H play. So Serbia would have to score 2 more goals than Ghana to advance. So most likely in the scenario the USA would play Ghana, but small chance of Serbia.

 

If Germany and Ghana tie and Serbia wins, Serbia and Ghana advance and USA plays Ghana.

If Germany and Ghana tie and Australia wins, Ghana and Germany advance unless Australia wins by 4+ goals, USA plays Germany

If Germany and Ghana tie and Serbia and Aussie tie, then Ghana and Germany advance, and the USA plays Germany

here's what I got, could be wrong:

 

We only get Germany if they draw with Ghana and Serbia draws or loses against Australia.

 

If Germany and Serbia win, we get Serbia.

 

If Germany win and Serbia draws or loses against Australia, we get Ghana.

 

Unless Australia wins by 800 goals or so, then we might get them.

Man, wish I could have watched that. How did we score the winning goal?

Altidore run up the right side, cross to Dempsey 3 feet from the goal line, off the goalie, right to Donovan, put it in an empty net.

And just to clarify, Demspey didn't have much of a chance. But it worked out really well that Dempsey wasn't able to get to it until he was just a few feet from the keeper, since the keeper had no shot of controlling the ball.

 

It wasn't the best of crosses but Clint made a great run, and that turned it into a 50/50 ball. Landon made the right supporting run.

Ghana has 4 points, Australia has 1 point, Germany and Serbia both have 3 points.

 

If Ghana wins, they move to 7 points. If Australia wins they move to 4 points. If Germany and Serbia both lose, they stay at 3 points. Australia advances no matter the score if they and Ghana win.

You're forgetting that Australia has a point.

 

If Germany and Australia win, the US could play Australia if they win by enough and/or Ghana loses by enough.

• How big is winning the group? Not only does the U.S. survive to fight another day, but it gets placed into a much easier quadrant of the single-elimination tournament that now takes place. If Germany can win Group D, the U.S. would probably meet Serbia or Ghana, avoiding Germany, with the winner of the U.S.’s second-round game to face the victor of Uruguay-South Korea. Long story short: Which quadrant would you rather be in, the one with Serbia/Ghana-Uruguay-South Korea or the one with Germany-Argentina-Mexico? I think we know the answer to that one.

The disallowed goal was a call that could have gone either was and remains debatable even after several stop motion viewings of the footage.

Their feet seem to be in the same position relative to the goal line, but the US player's body looks like it's over that foot, while the Algerian player is leaning forward. As the linesman was perfectly positioned, from his point of view the US player's body may have looked closer to the goal line.

 

Even with video review, you can debate this call till the cows come home. :wink:
