They do carry over in the knockout rounds though. So if you got a yellow in your round of 16 game and one in your quarterfinal game, you would miss the semifinal (if your team advanced).

Do they carry over from round of 16, to semis? Thus making you miss final?

Yes, and that's happend. IIRC, Michael Ballack missed the '02 final vs. Brasil because of that.

The Robin Roberts sound alike analyst was completely worthless breaking down that replay.

"Well, here's the ball here..."

Haha...yeah I noticed that too as I rewatched it...I think thoughts were kind of lost in the moment.

Another newb question. No ties in the knockout rounds, right? Do they just play overtime?

Penalty shootout, I think. But I'm just a newb as well and could be wrong.

My fifa world cup game had me play two 15 minute overtime periods, then I'm guessing it would have gone to penalty shots.

This story seems to make it sound like yellow card accumulation continues through the quarterfinal match. So the only way to miss the final is to get a red card in the semifinal. Also means that a yellow in the group stage and a yellow in either the Round of 16 or quarters means you miss a match.

30 minutes of extra time (not sudden death) followed by PK's if needed.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. As luck based as penalty shots are, they're still incredibly exciting.

Howard gratefully claims it

distribution brilliant

there are things on here for the usa

the announcers have been faaaaaaaantastic.

After the USA - Slovenia game, the announcer for the 1 p.m. game said "I don't know if you've seen it, but the USA - Slovenia game ended with a bit of controversy." Only he pronounced it "con-TRAHV-er-say"

then today we heard "cel-eh-BRAY-tor-ay"

Germany's loss to Serbia was their first in the group stage since 1986. They had 12 wins and four draws since losing to Denmark in the final group game in 1986.

Stop it at 18 seconds whit the line graphics on, then reread my post. If this had been an Algerian goal, you'd be calling blue murder using my argument.

I still say this one can get called either way. Slit second decision by the linesman that doesn't look obviously wrong even with the benefit of technology.

Your crazy euro video won't play for me.

Yahoo Sports[/url]"]PRETORIA, South Africa – Algeria soccer player Rafik Saifi slapped a female journalist across the face as the aftermath of the United States’ dramatic World Cup victory turned ugly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

While walking through the interview zone, Saifi spotted writer Asma Halimi, who works for Algerian newspaper Competition, and struck her with his open hand in front of dozens of witnesses. Halimi responded by striking the player in the mouth.

Saifi then threw a sports drink bottle at a wall in the interview area, as Halimi was ushered away by security staff.

Saifi came on as substitute for the last five minutes of the USA’s 1-0 victory.

“I said nothing to him and he reached over and hit me,” Halimi said to Yahoo! Sports. “So I hit him back. I said nothing to him first.”

It is understood that Saifi and Halimi had previously had a difference of opinion over an article she wrote for her newspaper.

“She was standing there and the guy came here and he hit her,” said Francisco Aguilar Chang, a reporter from Guatemala who witnessed the incident. “Then she hit him back and her nail caught his lip.”

Halftime scoreless in both group D matches, which really is the worst-case scenario for the US, as two ties puts Germany second and results in them facing the US team.

So the last time they lost in the group round they were called West Germany?
