No, Slovenia beat Algeria (3), are about to beat us (3) and would get a point for the draw with England (1), totaling 7.

 

Well under that math, the US would only get four, making this all moot.

In that situation, the USA is better off if England/Slovenia doesn't end in a draw, because the loser would have 4 and it wouldn't come down to differential.

So all we need is 2 goals the rest of this game, and to beat Algeria by more than England does. Oh, and England needs to not beat a team they should too.

 

 

Nightmarish.

 

If we manage to draw this and beat Algeria and England beats Algeria and either beats or ties Slovenia, it's likely we'll move on. If England beats Slovenia, we have five points and they have four so we're second. If they tie, it's goal differential which is basically how much you beat Algeria by, and Slovenia only beat Algeria by one so if we can beat them by two, we'd advance regardless of what England does.

 

Getting the tie today is easily the hardest part of that, though.

Also, doesn't it seem kind of dumb to keep going for the long ball from our own half when our best players are Donovan and Dempsey. We can't win balls in the air for crap either.

That second goal was bad marking by Onyewu and he didn't have the speed to recover.

 

First goal was far too much space and a good finish by the Slovenian player.

I just thought it was kind of weird that we kept going for a hail mary when Slovenia would immediately get the ball back and start applying the pressure again (prior to the 1st goal).
