Not trying to nitpick, but does anybody find it odd that Starlin has 3 XBH in 36 st-bats since his call up?

Not really. I didn't expect much power at all early on, as his biggest skill to date has been making consistent contact. Power shows up later.

Nope. He still has a lot of adjusting to do at this level as well as simply growing into the player he'll be physically. Like jersey said, they key right now is his approach at the plate. I really don't think anyone expecting him to show up with much power this early was approaching his call-up realistically.

Not shocked at all. He isn't much of a power hitter at this point of his career. And major leaguers aren't as likely to let him use his speed to take extra bases. He has plenty of time to continue to fill out and hit for more power. He already has the most important part of the equation which is making solid contact consistently.

I'm very concerned about his power. If a player doesn't show much ability for XBH in his first 36 at bats as a 20 year old .... it may never show up.

We were similarly concerned about your ability to make quality posts on NSBB at the age of 20..... but look how well that turned out !!!

Ha.

I never said I was concerned, I said I thought it was odd, that's all.

You better make sure you think about your post before you post them 'round these parts. Some of these guys are just looking to pounce on somebody.

To address your concern...He's only had 14 hits, so 3 XBH in that time is great. He's only 6 XBH behind Ramirez in 130 fewer AB's. His SLG% is still .500. I'm much less concerned about his slugging as I am about Ramirez's .288 and Lee's .346.

Here's something that is odd. He is 8 for 14 when he has 2 strikes, and he is only 1 for 8 when ahead in the count.

People were mocking Theriot for his lack of power, and yet are praising Castro for his ability to put the bat on the ball. I know the age difference, makes it more impressive on Castro behalf, but essentially Castro has been Theriot with better defense since his first game.

And what is odd about that. He's 20, Theriot is 30. Everybody said Castro's power isn't there yet. What is odd?

Better defense, better plate discipline, and 4 times the ISO.
